Between Han and HAL: Episode 9 - Solaris

Our August film is the 1972 Soviet production Solaris, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky,  based on the novel by legendary Polish science fiction savant Stanislaw Lem, and starring Luthiuanian actor Donatas Banionis. Psychologist Kris Kelvin is dispatched to a remote research station orbiting the eponymous ocean planet to try to discover why the scientists on duty there have become mentally unstable. Soon after his arrival, Kelvin begins to be affected by the same unexplained phenomenon as the others, and is confronted by unbearable memories.

Sounds festive, yes? And at 2 hours 35 minutes, a challenge. This is actually the second of three film adaptations thus far, including the well-worth-your-time 2002 feature starring George Clooney.

The usual reminders:

* If you replied that you'd attend, but your plans have changed, PLEASE update your RSVP, so that someone on the waiting list won't miss an opportunity to come.  If you have a significant other who'd also like to participate, please have him/her join this meet-up and RSVP separately. We have very limited space (10 people max), so unanticipated guests will really put a pinch on the seating situation.

* Doors open at 7PM (no early arrivals, please), movie starts at 8PM.

* This is a potluck, so bring something good to eat or drink to share.

* A donation of $2 per person is humbly requested to offset the costs associated with this event.

* We try to run a shoeless household, so please leave your shoes in the foyer when you arrive.

* Finally, we have a very fluffy, very friendly cat. So, if you're not a cat person--you've been warned!

We look forward to seeing you!

I think Andrei Tarkovsky's "Solaris (Solyaris)" is one of those Existentialist foreign films that critics rave about, but is just pretentious, overlong, and dull. To illustrate, its rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 96% ( http://www.rottentoma... ) and 90 at Metacritic ( http://www.metacritic... ) - just reading some of the positive reviews will make you wonder how they possibly saw the exact same movie we did.

Roger Ebert even put it on his Great Movies list ( http://www.rogerebert... )
