What is Speculative Fiction?
Speculative Fiction is a very wide umbrella. It includes science fiction (in all its many forms) as well as high fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk, cyberpunk, alternate history, horror, etc. Essentially, it's any fiction of a...well...speculative nature. That includes most things that are hard to define. Much "literary" writing falls into one of the many categories that comprise SpecFic, though the writers of "literary" fiction would rarely deign to admit it. There is also a lot of crossover from such genres as mystery, detective, thriller, erotica, and YA (in fact, it seems most YA falls under SpecFic these days.) Most children's literature falls under a general SpecFic definition, but it is usually treated as a separate genre.
The main thing to remember about Speculative Fiction is that it is the fiction without limits. Whether you're creating a fanciful world full of strange and wonderful creatures, images of a distant past or a near and frightening future; if your story occurs in a place that's not exactly here and now, and/or your characters are anything other than the folks next door, chances are you're writing speculative fiction.
Welcome to "Southern Fried Speculative Fiction Writer's Network," or, "So Fried SpecFic," or "SFSF," depending on how much time and effort you want to put into saying or writing the name.
What does"So Fried SpecFic" mean to you?
