Daytrip to Waterford

Ireland's oldest city!

For those travelling by train we will meet at The Butlers Chocolates stand in Heuston Station

at 09:45 and take the 10.15 train to Waterford.

For anyone taking the bus you should take the 9am bus.

If Bus Eireann are still on strike JJ Kavanaghs bus company also have buses from Dublin to Waterford.

We will meet the bus arrivals at Waterford bus station at 12.30 I will wait for you in beside the shop inside the station.

Our first port of call will be the Waterford City market which will hopefully offer us some good food on the move.

http://www.discoverireland.ie/Food-And-Drink/waterford-city-food-and-craft-market/70144

If this is a washout we will visit The Theatre Royal for coffee & a snack

http://www.theatreroyal.ie/

Next, I plan to take The Waterford Crystal Factory Tour as that is something unique to Waterford. The tour costs €12.60 and lasts around 1.5 hours.

http://www.waterfordvisitorcentre.com/Factory_Tour

If you're not interested in doing the factory tour it is quite close to some of the city's other attractions so we can co-ordinate meeting up afterwards.

There is a guy who runs a walking tour who is meant to be quite good if you prefer that alternative http://www.jackswalkingtours.com/tourinfo.html

Or you can just meander through the city - whatever suits : )

After the Crystal Factory we can visit The Medieval Museum & The Bishop's Palace.

http://www.discoverwaterfordcity.ie/index.php?contentid=1-day-tour

When we're finished there we should have some time to explore the city centre before grabbing another quick bite and getting our respective trains / buses.

Any questions or suggestions let me know in the comments.

I will be travelling by train. Seat details in earlier comment. I have just bought a tkt for the Waterford Crystal tour online.
Monika, are you travelling on the 9am bus (as Elaine suggested) or the 10am bus? I see Elaine has said she will meet you at 12.30pm at the bus station. Or perhaps you live somewhere en route to W? Just checking.

Hi Monika, I didn't realise the strike was still on, thot it was only a 1 day strike. Does the 10am bus get to W just after 12? Can you join us on the train? Anyway, looking forward to meeting you and everyone and having a great day out.

    May 13, 2013

    • Maria

I want to book the train...just...I'd like to know which should be the return time...so we can book the same train (don't think we are allowed to change the time of return ticket, unless paying penalty)...and maybe hopefully near seats...

In the irish-rail site seems not to be the offer, it's 15.99 each way...maybe the offer there is just buying at the station? Or there's some special page wher to book?

    May 12, 2013

    • Elaine H

Hi Maria, yes the price has gone up now closer to the time. It is now 15.99 each way.

      May 13, 2013

  • Colm M.

Hi, colm here, I'll be traveling from Kildare, so can someone send on the times of the trains from Dublin and Waterford to make sure I get on the right one. Cheers.

    May 12, 2013

    • Elaine H

Colm you need to get the train which leaves Kildare at 10.42. Its the one which left Dublin at 10.15. We'll be in carriage B

      1 · May 13, 2013

  • Maria

I find out here http://www.irishrail.ie/cat_offers.jsp?i=4577...the offer there is booking 7 days in advance., 1-6 days before it's 15.99, and the last day is 21.99. So just do not do the ticket the last day!! :D

Hello there, I'll join this trip to Port Láirge. Are all these 19 wonderful souls coming too or did they RSVP by mistake? I'm on the train too as I don't trust Bus Éireann - they might still be on strike next week. That Groupon voucher is for a family of 2 adults and 2 kids so not much use to me.

Hi Elaine, I will take the 10am bus as it is more convenient for me and will meet in you in Waterford. The bus will arrive into Waterford at 12noon. Should I meet you at the train station? Thanks, Monika

    May 5, 2013

    • Elaine H

Hi Monika, we can meet you at the bus station as that is closer to the city centre. The train arrives at 12:20 so we should be passing the bus station circa 12:30

I saw this deal on Groupon. It's a very good value considering the standard entrance fee for Medieval Museum and the Bishop's Palace is 5€ each.

Hi are there only 3 of us going on this trip - 2 by train and 1 by bus? I've some friends who might want to go but RSVPs are closed and there is a waiting list. What's happening with this event? There's not been much activity /news /updates for a long while.

Hi Elaine this daytrip sounds interesting. Any idea how much it will cost? Thanks

    March 5, 2013

    • Elaine H

Hi Maureen, there is an offer on train tickets 9.99 each way so €19.98 return or the bus is €17.50 return. There is a small farmers market there where I suggest we pick up lunch so that would be under €10. I will check the museums etc. cost. Personally I would like to do the tour of the Waterford Crystal factory which is around €12. People can do this or further independent sightseeing. So I'd estimate the cost will be around €50 or so

Hi all a return ticket on the train is currently €21.98. You should be able to book at this price until 3-4 days before the journey. After that the fare increases to €32.50

I have booked my train ticket:

    Dublin Heuston 10:15
    Arriving: Waterford 12:20
    Seat B07

    Departing: Waterford 18:25
    Arriving: Dublin Heuston 20:40
    Seat A15

Hi Rosaleen, I will be going there again for the harvest festival so could maybe make that a meetup. There are quite a few different things to see in Waterford so we can definitely go more than once :)
