Handel: Sonata in E major for violin and continuo Mozart: Duet in G major, originally for violin and viola Villa-Lobos: 2 Choros for violin and cello Vivaldi: Summer, from his Four Seasons, in Duo Chagall's own virtuosic transcription One of Ireland’s foremost classical music partnership, DUO CHAGALL came into being in1990 when two music students at the Guildhall School decided to sight-read Kodaly’s Duo op.7.
Dublin-born violinist Gillian Williams and French cellist Arun Rao have since then brought this most demanding combination to audiences throughout Ireland. Their shared passion for a beautiful sound and constant striving for musical integrity, allied to an impeccable command of famously challenging pieces, have earned DUO CHAGALL both public and critical acclaim.
Along with great twentieth-century works by Ravel, Kodaly, Martinu, Honegger and Gliere, DUO CHAGALL have programmed the rarely performed Duets for violin and viola by Mozart in a transcription for cello that is virtually unchanged from the original viola part. They have also contributed to the Duo repertoire with their 2000 and 2001 World- Premieres of works by Irish composers Raymond Deane (“Pentacle”) and Rhona Clarke (“Jagged Edge”), the former written at their behest (with Arts Council funding). They recently gave the World Premiere of Deane’s String Quartet n.1 at the composer’s 60th birthday celebrations in St Anne’s, Dawson St (Dublin) to critical acclaim.
Though mostly appearing as solo duet, DUO CHAGALL has featured in concertante repertoire by Brahms,Delius, Saint-Saens and Mozart ( Sinfonia Concertante K364, the original viola part being played on cello), and performs regularly in collaboration with distinguished international artists.
DUO CHAGALL has recorded works by Ravel, Milhaud and the celebrated Passacaille adapted by Johan Halvorsen from Handel’s Harpsichord Suite (released in June 2009). The Duo performs regularly in the South of France since 2009 when it was invited to host a summer concert series at the Musee Vuillod-St Germain in Pezenas. They also launched an innovative classical music festival in County Fingal (in partnership with Fingal County Council), “Autumn Sounds”, in Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, under the auspices of OPW. This concert series has had a resounding success since 2010 and will continue this year with evenings devoted to the chamber music of Robert Schumann and music from pre-1917 Russia.
In addition to their activities as solo and chamber music performers, Ms Williams and Mr Rao are committed to music education in Ireland and have been members of staff at the DIT Conservatoire since 1994.
