Welcome to SoCal.js

I'm excited that so many people have joined this group in just a few short weeks. ?I see some familiar faces, but even more that I haven't yet met, so I look forward to meeting everyone.

Below are some general thoughts & ideas for the group. I view this more as a community than a committee, so I welcome any and all feedback. ?Go ahead, hit the reply button and fire away.

Anything you send to [address removed] will go to everyone who hasn't opted out of this list. ?Because people can opt-out or opt for a daily digest, don't hesitate to make use of this list or feel like you are annoying people. ?See something cool on Ajaxian? ?Blast it out. ?Hear of a JS related event nearby, go for it. ?See a recent talk that blew your mind? Send a link to the slides. ?The only rule I ask is that you don't send out job postings. ?There will be time set aside at meetups for announcements, so please hold off on announcing your openings until then.

Meetup Schedule & Venue
I'd enjoy a combo between monthly presentation nights mixed with less formal happy hours. For presentation nights, we all know LA traffic sucks, and there are far better things to do on the weekend than geek it up, so weeknights starting at 7 or 8 are preferable. ?Also, I'm fairly new to LA and don't have much experience with local venues, so I may need some assistance in that dept.?

For small to mid-size crowds, CoLoft seems to be the fan favorite and they've agreed to host the group. ?I'll be at the LAPHP meetup there tomorrow (Tuesday) night and will get a better idea of capacity and availability. If you are available and want to come, details @

For larger crowds [masked]), we have event space at Yahoo in Santa Monica, and I've been to events at the SM public library auditorium which seems like a good option as well.

For non-presenting nights, bars/restaurants are way more fun, so if anyone has some suggestions on a venue for drinkups, I'd love to hear it. ?There is a bar & grill at Yahoo Center, and perhaps the Myspace peeps in the group can snag their cool rooftop area (with lasers!) for us sometime. =D

Over the last few months I've attended numerous JS events around the country and have been amazed at the community that is rapidly building up. ?It seems like every month there is something going on, and these aren't $1,500 events in San Francisco organized by O'Reilly, but $200 sold-out events organized by developers and held in places like DC, Raleigh, & Austin. ?If anyone has event planning experience (or wants some) and the time to plan something like this, I'll assist. In my conversations with the organizers of these recent events, the common feedback is that everyone is so eager to build the community that getting speakers & sponsors is easy. The main challenges lie in the venue, fronting costs, and alllllllll the small details. ?I'm still recovering from planning my last devcamp 9 months ago.

That's about all I can think of for now, so the floor is yours. Go ahead, introduce yourself. ?What are some thoughts or ideas you have on the group?
