***You must register online with the monastery directly by midnight on Monday March 22nd in order to be able to come. They need time to shop and prepare for the right # of people.

The registration page is really clunky, so be patient and give yourself some time to do it. I think it might be a test... For those of us who get too frustrated or wait too late, we aren't quite ready! (That was me the first time) You can call on Saturday, but the registration office is closed on Sunday and Monday.

We are going to join the monks and nuns of Deer Park Monastery in Escondido for the weekend. Deer Park is a monastery that practices in the Vietnamese Zen Buddhist tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. No prior experience is necessary. We will be full participants in the monastery activities that weekend.

Women stay with the nuns in Clarity hamlet or the women's camping area, and men stay with the monks in Solidity hamlet or the men's camping area. If you are a couple, let them know when you register and you can stay together in the Monk's hamlet.

Below is a rough schedule of the events:

I recommend coming on the early side of the check in window on Friday... 1:00pm - 2:00pm to enjoy the beautiful mountains before all the activities. You do need to arrive by 5:00pm, which means leaving by 1:00 or 2:00pm from LA.

Friday night there will be dinner in silence, followed by an orientation where we meet all the weekend's retreatants and get a general introduction to the practices of the monastery.

Saturday starts early with wake up at 5:30 for sitting meditation at 6:00am. Then there will be breakfast, and then a working meditation where we practice mindfulness in some sort of service to the community.

Sunday will probably be sitting meditation, eating meditation (breakfast), walking meditation, and a dharma talk, followed by lunch.

Most of the day is spent in mindfulness practice, so there isn't a lot of time to connect as a group, but I would love to organize carpooling down and back as a way for people to get to know one another and share their experiences from the weekend.
