"Avatar" is also an emotional journey of redemption and revolution. It is the story of a wounded ex-marine, thrust unwillingly into an effort to settle and exploit an exotic planet rich in biodiversity, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival," and "... creating an entire world, a complete ecosystem of phantasmagorical plants and creatures, and a native people with a rich culture and language."

Please join BustAGroove and the Sci-Fi Fanatics Crew for a highly-anticipated IMAX 3-D film that's one of this year's blockbusters reuniting James Cameron (Aliens, Titanic) Sigourney Weaver (Aliens) and James Horner (composer - Aliens, Titantic) - "Avatar".

Premise: A paraplegic ex-marine war veteran is unwillingly sent to establish a human settlement on the distant planet of Pandora, only to find himself battling humankind alongside the planet's indigenous Na'vi race in this ambitious, digital 3-D sci-fi epic from Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron. The film, which marks Cameron's first dramatic feature since 1997's Titanic, will be shot on the proprietary FUSION digital 3-D cameras developed by Cameron and will offer a groundbreaking mix of live-action dramatic performances and computer-generated effects. The revolutionary motion-capture system created for the film allows the facial expressions of actors to be captured as a virtual camera system enables them to see what their computer-generated counterparts will be seeing in the film, and Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning Weta Digital visual effects house has been hired to supervise Avatar's complex visual effects.

  • Trivia: Cameron originally attempted to get this film made in 1999 as his immediate follow-up to Titanic (1997). However, at the time, the special effects he wanted for the movie ran the proposed budget up to $400 million. No studio would fund the film, and it was subsequently shelved for almost ten years.

  • Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald

  • Run Time: 2 hrs. 30 mins (The Dark Knight was 2 hrs. 32 mins)

  • MPAA Rating: PG-13 for intense epic battle sequences and warfare, sensuality, language and some smoking

I'll see you at the movies.

By far one of the best SCMF events ever! Thanks a bunch to Maria for hosting, IMAX for the posters and T-shirts, Fandango for enabling us to get our members in for free and, most of all, our SCMF members for coming out! Oh yeah, the movie was good, too!

What a nice time! A good movie, nice swag from Fandango, not to mention the big one - admission, and really nice, fun people while waiting in line, waiting for the film to start after they opened the theater for us and after the movie for the wrap-up. Thanks for this event.

I'm excited for tonight! Thanks so much for the free ticket, it's amazing that IMAX can provide that kind of support to your group. And t-shirts?? It's not a problem wearing the t-shirt for the group photo op--as a matter of fact, if you want me to wear one on my head as well, I'll do that too! It's very generous of IMAX to do that for us :-)
