Welcome to SoCal SMAPs (Single Mamas & Papas) - a support and activity group for single parents living in Greater Metropolitan Los Angeles!
This group has been around for almost a decade - wow! I started it way back in December of 2006. I had just moved back home to California after living in Chicago and working as a journalist. At the time, my two oldest kids were 12 and 14. Now, they're young adults! And I'm a single mom again. My youngest is an awesome second-grader!
With the emotional, physical and financial toll that often accompanies divorce, separation or having a child on your own, it's often tough being a single parent while trying to maintain your sanity. We can help each other out!
This is a friendly group. It is NOT a dating meetup for single parents. Having said that, love can happen and love is good. Some couples have met through the group, gotten married and others are in long-term relationships. Yay!
This is also NOT an online-only meetup group. Members are expected to come to events and interact with other parents and their children.
We go on hikes, to amusement parks, have BBQ's at the park, beach days, camping weekends and much more! We occasionally have adult dinners and game nights. Check out our calendar and, if you're interested in volunteering and organizing events, please let me know.
Fun IS important and we all need that release but some of us are also going through a difficult transition period. We may be dealing with the newness of separation, divorce, court and tough financial matters. I think offering support to one another and looking for folks in the outside community who can offer advice (lawyers, mediators, therapists) is equally as important as just engaging in enjoyable activities. We plan those types of events as well.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
