Basic Wireframing

Dan Klyn will be covering basic wireframing strategy & creation from the perspective of people who consume and make Wireframes. The talk will be about 30 minutes and we will follow with an hour long working session. Bring your Sharpies, Markers, and any large paper you have on hand. We will have some to share but bringing your own would be appreciated.

Dan Klyn is an IA and co-founder of The Understanding Group. A Michigan native, Dan’s time is spent across TUG offices in LA, NYC,  Ann Arbor, and Grand Rapids. He teaches IA at the School of Information at the University of Michigan.

Jessica Duverneay will be assisting Dan and is an Information Architect at the LA office of TUG, global producer of World IA Day 2012, and current SF Valley transplant.

p.s. Our previous presenter, Jan Cavan, will be giving a broad overview of the design process in the next few months.

We're happy to have a food sponsor in Q Connects as well!

Thanks to Kleverdog coworking for their hosting! (see the Sponsor logo on the left).

It was great to get some more insight on the intricacies of UI development, meet other UXers, and get some hands-on group time outside of my usual workplace.
at first, I wished the lecture were a bit longer, but it was actually the right amount of information and time in retrospect. Thank you to the sponsoring companies and this meetup group.

The speaker Dan Klyn did an excellent job of defining what wire frames are for and how they are different from design. This distinction helped me immensely. Also, working on the project with other attendees was great because I got to see how different people can approach the task of creating wire frames. The location was great and the food/drinks was really appreciated!

Hi Abba, I'd love to say yes but since we're at capacity, it's probably not a good idea to just show up. You're next in line, so there's a good chance someone will decide not to come in the next hour.

Will people on the wait list be able to get in?

Anyone headed to the event tonight from the West Side? I'll be happy to pay for parking.

The Gold Line is highly recommended. I'll be coming from Pasadena on it. It's an easy 7 minute walk from the Chinatown Metro Gold Line station… http://g.co/maps/quhcs

Hi all, it's Kelly from Kleverdog. We're at 418 Bamboo Lane (bet Hill & Broadway). Bamboo Lane's an unmarked street, but Mario's map may help you find us bit.ly/qy8Xkj. There's metered street parking up tll ~8pm (free after that), a parking structure next door at Bamboo Plaza ($3.75 flat rate after 4pm; entrance on Bernard) & plenty of nearby parking lots for $3-$5. Landmarks to look for are Phoenix Bakery on Broadway, and Golden City Restaurant on Hill St. Also 2 blocks from the Goldline!

Thanks Mario, but since there might be someone with a more urgent need to attend I just unRSVPd.

Hi Tom, I think part of the presentation is about making those unintelligible scrawls intelligible. So if you think that you'd benefit from the hands-on you should definitely go!

    May 15, 2012

  • Tom D.

I've never done any proper wireframing before - just unintelligible scrawls on a notepad. Since the rest of the group wants to have a hands-on session, should I let someone else with more experience than me have my seat?

What equipment should we bring, if we're all going to work on things in unison?

I definitely like the idea of a hands-on session.

    February 24, 2012

Sounds good! Maybe we could make it more of a hands on collaborative session. We choose a site/app concept and wireframe it. I actually emailed Axure (http://axure.com/) to see if they're interested in speaking to our group. Hopefully they'll get back to me.
