Get Going with Git

Do you find yourself wishing that you had kept a backup copy of the stuff you did a few weeks ago?

Are backup copies piling up on your hard drive or server?

Would you like to collaborate with other people more easily?

Try using Git.

Git is fast becoming the version control tool of choice over older options such as Subversion and CVS for many developers. If you're not on Git yet or aren't using version control, get up to speed on Git and learn about associated services such as Github and Beanstalk App.

We'll cover the basics of getting it installed, covering your b**t and common practices for sharing your code with others using Git.

I'm decent with Git but if anyone else from membership would like to present who loves it feel free to volunteer.

I look forward to seeing you there!

I don't remember if it was mentioned but for Mac users you need to install XCode in order to run Git on your machine.

Hi Mario, Are you also going to talk about GitBox. Just curious since I remember liking it.

    February 7, 2013

    • Mario N.

Hi Saba, sorry for the late reply. I'll be happy to mention it. I might even give it a try. However, I've run into situations with GUI based git apps that don't exactly do what you need. I'm sure that situation is changing but I'm probably going to stick with showing things via the Terminal / Git Bash cmd line plus going over a conceptual overview of various approaches and methods (in a fun way I hope...)

Ok thanks :) No pressure but I've used Gitbox at a client's per their request and it works fine.

Hi, currently I'm unable to attend this talk b/c I have a class at the time but if the speaker posts slides afterward (or if there's any video), I'd like to find out about it. Is the best way to check this page the week after the meetup? Thanks.

Hi Carol, I'll try to do so. :) Although I generally don't have a verbatim version of presentations since that's pretty boring to listen to.
