Calling all Social Entrepreneurs - Plan to be inspired.

  • Jun 19, 2014 · 6:00 PM

The incredible ideas and passions of our members are truly inspiring.  You have to come and experience this for yourself.

About 20% of our members have shown up at the last three Meetups and this is where they stand in the pipeline.

Interested    3.2%
Networking  3.2%
Supporting Freelancer  19.4%
Business Idea  25.8%
Prototype Business  9.7%
Existing Social Enterprise  38.7%

Our Mission

—To support anyone with the goal to create, grow or work for a social enterprise
(for profit or nonprofit).

—To greatly improve the success rate of our members through asking members to:

-Set realistic goals

-Network with other members

-Engage with project teams at Hatch

-Pitch your business at Hatch Soup and
other events

-Attend workshops at Hatch

-Attract funding for your project or
business through ChangeFunder

We will  continue to use this Meetup for all attendees to learn more about each other and to cross promote each others activities.  Several people have already found others with the same interests. The collective power of the group is so incredible, I can't tell you how many great contacts I have made in only three meetings.

We don't do workshops or speeches as both Hatch and the PDX area have many of these everyday.  We have everyone share what they doing or hoping to do and what they need and hope to get from meeting up.

You don't need a business or a specific idea, but so far 94% of attendees do.

We ask the following questions, so think about how you will answer them:

1. Where are you in the pipeline? One minute statement each.

a. I am interested in the topic and want to get involved.

b. I want to network and build a career in a Social Enterprise.

c. I want to support a currently developing Social Enterprise.

d. I have an idea for a project or organization that I need support for.

e. I have a working prototype of a new Social Enterprise that I need to launch.

f. I am actively working for or running a Social Enterprise and I need support to help us grow.

2. What resources, knowledge, skills, talents, or contacts can you bring to our members?  This can be either pro bono (for the public good without financial compensation) or paid for in dollars or in the bartering of goods or services as you see fit.

Everyone has something to offer such as: I can write an article, do some posting and tweeting, make some calls, go meet somebody, visit another group and let them know about our Meetup, do some research, build a web page, hand out some cards, help with the Meetup and on and on.

3. Do you have a goal or objective, project, or organization that this Meetup group can help you with?

Try to ask for something realistic, measurable, with some timeline. For example, I need a storyboard, script, and video for my organization in two weeks, I can pay $100.00 for a day of work, can anyone help me with this or I have no money but I can help you with XYZ in return?  I need someone to research XYZ and to prepare a summary of the competitors in this area by next month, can someone do some research for me for $50.00 or for????  I need a Drupal developer to do XYZ by March 15 and I can pay $50 an hour......  You may or may not have something to ask for, but if you do, this is how to do it if you want someone to step up.

4. List any ideas about the way this Meetup group or Hatch can be of service toward meeting your goals and objectives.

5. List some resources  or contacts that you have found that you can share with the group. I will add them to a shared resource list.

6. Connect with everyone on LinkedIn and Twitter.

7. Ask a friend who would like our Meetup group to join. Send them the link:

We would like everyone who comes to have a positive outcome. Maybe just a new contact they can work with or an action item to go home and work on.

Unlike all the other Meetups I have attended so far, each member will have time to tell us about themselves, their interests and needs verses listening to a long speech or sitting in a big group hoping to sit next to someone who has some interest in what you are doing or need.

The limit is 12 to 15 people per meeting so we can actually get to know each other, so reserve your spot and if something changes please remove your reservation so others can take your slot.

If we get more folks than we can handle, we will have two Meetups a month.

If this Meetup sounds inspiring (it is), please don't hesitate to come to the meeting. We are all easy to get along with and we all look forward to meeting you!

Learning a lot about our Portland Social Entrepreneurs and the amazing things their up to and how we can help each other thrive. The collaborative "we" are making the community a better place for everyone by sharing our vision, talents, and energy with others. Diversity. Great connections. Amazing energy. A lot of good doing. Yup, I'm inspired.

I am pleased to introduce for you tonight and would like to invite you all to post quests for students to collaborate with you on projects you need help with. The end result is you get help with your project while at the same time helping a college student gain hands-on experience. What could be better for a social entrepreneur?

I just launched the beta basics version (no graphics) this week. The platform is all free now and by invitation only. I made a special invite code for Social Entrepreneurs Meetup members: SOCENTMP

There are already 10 students on the platform, but I have access to hundreds of college students since I was very involved at Portland State. I'm waiting until multiple entrepreneurs post their quests, so I know what academic majors to target.

Please check it out and let me know what you think. You can contact me at my email: [masked]

Wow, over 20 people this time. I guess we will give it a shot. We have plenty of space, so I will increase to 25 seats.

Due to visiting family in Texas, I won't be able to make this meetup. However, I don't think anything will get in the way of visiting in July. Looking forward to meeting up again in July!

Hi Jason. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, so come to the meetings and meet people. This is what Meetup is all about. See you soon.

I have tons of ideas of businesses I could start but need some direction and inspiration. Perhaps meeting with you folks will allow me to realize some of my social entrepreneurial ideas or help you with your own.
