Social Historic Walks Pages

Hello and Welcome!

This group is ran by Hazel from London Guided Walks who is a qualified, enthusiastic & insured London guide, offering discounted walks so you can do more for less.

This group has something for every Londoner; a little bit of learning, entertainment and interaction. Questions are very welcome and post walk drinks are always an option. We do both walks and history events. Click on the calendar to see upcoming events.

The group is a friendly bunch, may of whom come back again and again so I must be doing something right! Join us for some walking and some talking.

I write and research the walks myself. This involves me delving into archives for hours and plodding the streets until I have the finished product for you to enjoy.

Everyone is Welcome on these walks.

Please note you are responsible for your own safety. We will be using official crossings where possible. If you have a special mobility requirements please let me know in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What will you be doing at your Meetup?

These meetups are guided or highlights walks in and around London. It's a chance to walk around different parts of London with different themes, have a chat to the Guides and to fellow attendees and enjoy a couple of hours with like minded people i.e. people who like a bit of history who like to walk whilst being sociable. Post walk drinks are often available at a local watering hole near to where the walk ends. Please bear in mind that these walks are non-smoking.

What will it be like?

Fun! We have done the hard work so you do't have to.

Will it be an activity?

Just walking and talking, nothing strenuous. If you do have a mobility issue please do let us know beforehand so we can amend the walk if necessary.

What's an interesting issue we'll discuss?

Anything that is covered by the walk but in general the theme is London and its people. We will also cover elements of social housing, architecture, murders, key music venues, historical people, artists, writers, actors etc. We're lucky, London has it all!

Who's presenting?

Hazel from londondguidedwalks.co.uk plus additional qualified guides to provide variation.

What size are your groups?
Ideally we aim not to have more than 25 people in each group for a guided walk. For led walks the RSVP is open as we do experience significant no shows for cash only events.

What will the Guide present?

Key facts about interesting buildings and/or the people who designed or lived in them.

Do members need to bring anything?

Please wear sensible shoes. A bottle of water and a brolly doesn't go amiss with British weather for both rain and shade and wearing sunscreen is always a good idea. Suitable clothing to walk around the streets of London is also a good idea. Please be aware you are responsible for your own safety.

Who should come?

Anyone who is remotely interested in London and its rich history. Check out the theme of each guided walk to know more.

Are newcomers welcome?

Yes of course!

Who shouldn't come?

Anyone who doesn't like walking or London or history. A general grasp of English is also useful. This is what Alex from Italy said: “Really enjoyed my first walk. Hazel is a friendly, experienced guide with a thorough knowledge of hidden London secrets. I highly recommend her tours to non-native speakers who want to improve their English and learn a number of amusing anecdotes at the same time. Looking forward to my next event!” June 2014

What should a newcomer expect?

To meet an engaged bunch of Londoners and a passionate, qualified London guide. There will be an intro about the walk and the necessary safety announcement before we head off for the scheduled walk in London with stops matching to the theme of the walk. It's a casual affair where you can chat to people in between the stops and oooh and ahhh at the fabulous info the Guide delivers at each stop. Each stop should last no more than 5 mins for guided walks.

Why should people come?

Cos it's something cheap and interesting to do! It also keeps the 'ole grey matter working too. These walks are at discounted prices with qualified London guides from www.londonguidedwalks.co.uk

How will members benefit from coming to your Meetup?

We're a friendly bunch. We Guides have worked hard to create bespoke well researched walks. We have even submitted some walks as part of our Uni Guiding course. Yes, they're that good. One thing you won't be is bored. There is something for everyone. If you disagree then let us know!

How long will the Meetup be?

Depends in each walk but usualy 60mins-3hrs then post walk drinks (optional)

Is it okay to arrive late?

Nope. The time you see is the time we leave. The Guides will be at the spot 15mins prior to the departure time.

What does being on a waiting list mean?
As the date of the walk gets closer some of those who have rspv'd yes may change theirs to no which means the next person on the waiting list is then offered their place to come.

We will be repeating walks throughout the year as well as new ones. All those who are on this waiting list will be given the first opportunity to rsvp to the walk before it is announced to the rest of the group.

My family are visiting London do you do private walking tours?

Absolutely! We cover a number of themes in each walk. These include: art and literature walks, Victorian London, river walks and canal walks and 60 min post work walks. Our official website: http://londonguidedwa...

Can I smoke on your walk?
For the benefit of everyone it would be great if you could not smoke for the duration of the walk which is usually 1-2hrs.

I want to RSVP but don't have a PayPal account. What do I do?
You can still RSVP online and pay by card. Watch out short video here: http://www.meetup.com...
If you really don't want to do that then please email me socialwalks-hazel@yahoo.co.uk and I'll give you details for a bank transfer and add you to the 'Yes' list manually.
If you just don't like spending money online then we do have some walks where you pay by cash only. These are usually the Weekday and Weekend Wander walks.
