Our next Meetup will be devoted to the philosophy of art. The big question: What is art? Must a thing be beautiful to be art? If so, what is beauty? Are beauty and art both in the eye of the beholder? In other words, is a thing’s status as art or not art an objective question?
Our exploration of the big question will be helped by considering examples that may be controversial. Consider the country scenes painted on old saws. Are they art? What about gangsta rap? Or elevator music? When, if ever, are the products of crafts like carpentry and knitting art?
Finally, when, if ever, should art be censored? Do artists have certain moral responsibilities to uphold?
Our discussion will be moderated by co-organizer, and artist, Carla Stine? (Or does she just think she’s an artist? :-) )
