Hello, Dave. When I send out announcements to Socrates Cafe-goers, I use the list of members at the Socrates Cafe Web site. I can't register your friends, but they can register themselves at http://www.meetup.com/socratescafe-119/.

I'm afraid I don't have time to start a second philosophy group. But I'm not sure it's quite necessary yet. Perhaps it will be when we regularly have more than 30 people who want to attend our meetings.

Regards,
Andy

Count me in.  John and Mary Roam asked me to add them to your e-mail for Socrates Cafe.  Their address is [address removed].  Are we getting to bitg; should we start a second philosophy group?  Dave E

Announcing a new Meetup for Socrates Cafe!

What: July 2010 Meetup: Protesting for Social Justice

When: Saturday, July 3,[masked]:00 AM

Where:
Mama Jean's Market
1727 South Campbell Avenue
Springfield, MO 65807

Our topic for next time comes from Sherri Gabbert:

"I grew up in the 60's and 70's watching artists, college students, and thinkers take successful stands on social issues. Did American change to the extent I believed it would, no, but it did change. Today, I look around me and see injustice still exists, wars we ought not to be in, white, Christian and male privilege continue to prevail ... what I do not see are social revolutionaries, or college students who care, or thinkers banding together to 'do.' I see tea-baggers too clueless to even understand the vernacular and everyday citizens regurgitating rhetoric spun by bought and paid for politicians. America's hope always rests in her younger generation but they are so disconnected even from one another they text date. I want to know what has happened to the American rebel, to Mrs. Parks and the Little Rock Nine, to chaining oneself to whatever ethical tree government and religion ought not to cut down ... I want to know what we are going to do about it."

Sherri's remarks raise interesting questions. Certainly the mass demonstrations of the '60s and early '70s for civil rights and against the war in Vietnam have no parallel today. Is that because social justice has been achieved, by and large? Are the wars America is currently involved in more just than the Vietnam War? Or is it because Americans have become less informed about issues of justice, misled by the media, perhaps? Or have we just grown more apathetic, diverting ourselves with an inexhaustible supply of TV channels, Web sites, and video games?

A note about scheduling: I realize that the next Meetup is scheduled for the July 4th weekend, a weekend some people might have plans to get together with family. I wanted to get our next meeting in by July 10th, at the latest, but the meeting room at Mama Jean's was already booked for the 10th. And this coming Saturday, I thought, would be too soon. That left July 3rd.

Hope to see you then!

Yours in Socrates,
Andy
