Meetup Description: Dear Socrates Cafe-goers,
Our November meeting is devoted to the question of paternalism vs. respecting the autonomy of others. The person who suggested our topic focused on its relevance to "parenting ethics": When should parents respect their children's wishes and allow them to decide for themselves, even when the decision might be unwise, and when should parents paternalistically override their children's wishes? But the same question, or a closely related one, arises in other contexts as well. Should we respect (not object to) the choices of our friends, (adult) family members, and work colleagues because they are autonomous beings with a right to make their own choices, or is it more praiseworthy, in the long run, to try to dissuade them from or to actively oppose (even by deceit, if necessary) what we see as ill-advised designs?
These questions in turn raise the basic issue of respect. What is it to respect another person? And should all our dealings with others be respectful, or should respect be kept within certain limits?
Please note that we'll have the meeting room this time for only an hour. So let's try to get started promptly at 10:30.
Hope to see lots of you there, old members and new.
Yours in Socrates,
