Announcing a new Meetup for Socrates Cafe!
What: Socrates Cafe August Meetup
When: August 15,[masked]:00 AM
2924 E Sunshine St
Springfield, MO 65804
Dear Socrates Cafe-goers,
I'm afraid I have to make this brief, as I'm away at a conference and short on time.
Our topic for the upcoming Meetup (on which we decided at the end of the last Meetup) is (what I'll call) "the ethics of fidelity."
Questions about the ethics of fidelity have long surrounded marriage. Should marriage be, as the traditional wedding vow has it, "till death do us part"? Or is commitment to lifelong marriage properly a relic of a bygone era in which women were dependent on men to provide for them? Some even argue that the ideal of fidelity during
marriage is needlessly constricting. If there are periods when one spouse isn't meeting the other spouse's sexual needs, isn't it selfish not to allow those needs to be met by someone else? Is there anything unethical about open or polygamous marriages?
Similar questions can be raised about the physical relationships of unmarried people. Is there something ethically defective about the person who engages in multiple physical relationships at once? Does the boyfriend or girlfriend who demands that his or her significant other not simultaneously date other people have an ethical basis for the demand?
In short, is our society's preference for monogamy nothing more than a bias?
Hope you can make it to next Saturday's Meetup!
Yours in Socrates,
P.S. We have the meeting room only from 10 to 11 AM. The meeting rooms at other Paneras in Springfield were already booked, and the San Francisco Oven now doesn't open until 11!
