Hello, Socrates Cafe-goers.
Thanks to the folks who came out for our discussion about the costs and benefits of social diversity. As usual, we didn't reach a consensus, but I hope the conversation provided good food for thought.
Next time our topic will be the importance (or unimportance?) of social recognition. So much of what human beings do is motivated by a desire for recognition of some sort. Think of all the people-pleasers out there; or the aspirants for American Idol fame; or the near-swoons of the recent Academy-Award winners; or conspicuous consumption; or of all the money people spend on clothes, makeup, jewelery, and cosmetic surgery, even when they are happily married and aren't attempting to attract a mate. Are we too concerned with securing the recognition of others? On the other hand, people who don't give a damn what others think of them seem unhuman; some are psychopaths. When it comes to the desire for social recognition, then, what constitutes the happy medium?
Carla Stine has generously offered to moderate the discussion. Hope to see you there.
Yours in Socrates,
