Re: [softwaredev-113] Scrum master training

there are plenty of resources online about the scrum concept thingy, you can know the ins and the outs just by googling... but I see a great market for entrepreneurs in which we can exchange ideas for $1.5k.

You might not see me there unless I can get a great discount. Also, $1,499.99 is more like a good joke and less of a great discount. But I might be there, even if it is relatively free to me.

How did I get myself in this conversation? I really am not sure at the moment, but I will try to use math to prevent any further miscalculations.

I might have been disrupted by these messages. But at least you guys, now, know.

Hi All,

Centare will be having a public Professional Scrum Master (PSM) Course in Madison, in February.  We are finalizing the dates of the Madison PSM class this week. Stay tuned.

More info on our training and coaching offerings can be found here: http://www.centare.com/expertise/coaching-and-training/

Thanks for all the interest.

For Centare's PSM in March (according to the link I had provided earlier), it's ~1500 if you register before Jan 31 then it's 2k if you register after.

How much is the class?

I've worked with both agile and non-agile companies, and have to say that executive (C-level) buy in is crucial to getting agile to work. Beware of anyone who teaches "agile" that has a PMP certification (or hangs out with those who do). It's kind of like saying that this course in Socialism will be taught by Milton Friedman.

In the end, Agile must be experienced to be understood. And then iterated upon. If the big cheeses are in line, you'll gel as a team and get it right.

Peter,

We were fortunate enough to bring in Ron Jefferies and Chet Hendrickson.  We had decided to transition to scrum as a company (8-9 developers, 2 QA, 4 Product Owners) and were fortunate enough to get the funds to bring those heavy hitters in.

Peter,

In any event, I see there are other classes available in the area
on the scrum alliance website, do they have a tendency to get
cancelled?  Are they worth the money?  And who are the good
trainers?

I attended a CSM class with Doug Shimp (3Back) c2009 and thought he was a very good trainer. You might also look at Centare; I believe they are affiliated with Scrum.org; my vague impression is that their training has more depth than SA's.

Now, putting on my BA hat, "What are you trying to accomplish?"

If an employer or client requires that you have training, that's pretty easy.

If you're (about to be) part of an established Scrum shop and want a good foundation, the trainers above (3Back and Centare) will get you there. Is it worth it? It depends. There are a number of good books on Agile in general and Scrum in particular. If you're good at visualizing a team in action from a book, then a book is plenty. If not, the experiences a good trainer will create in the class will really help you.

If your organization is embarking on a transition from a plan-driven approach, that's a whole 'nother story. There's no single answer to that, because there are so many people and process starting points. There are patterns, however.

The Agile Madison group is showing signs of life again. That's worth looking into.
