Hike to Blue Lake in the Sky Lakes Wilderness and swim

This is a moderate hike of about 10 total miles with 1,000' of cumulative elevation gain to Blue Lake. Blue Lake is situated in a natural cirque and provides the opportunity to go swimming for those interested. En route we pass several other mountain lakes including Island Lake where we'll visit the historic Waldo tree. We may even have the opportuity to pick a few huckelberries along the way. The trail head is about an hour's drive from Medford; expect to be back late afternoon.

PLEASE NOTE: Group size in the Sky Lakes Wilderness is limited to eight (8). As we have in the past, we'll break into smaller groups, but keep each other in sight.

Please be on time.

Well behaved dogs welcome.

Those coming from Ashland can also chose to meet at the same time 8:30 AM at ShopnKart and drive up Dead Indian Memorial Highway and make a left at the intersection of Highway 140, meeting at the Great Meadows (about a quarter of a mile on left).

Was great except we had car trouble and were late and had to rely on David's excellent ribbon trail markers.

Thanks David for the pertinent info and logistics. My Civic does not like too much "off-roading"- so until I obtain an appropriate vehicle, I will "vicariously" live the "Dream!"....I'm sure it will be Nirvana! Lee

Unless someone needs a ride from Medford, we will skip meeting at Albertson's and drive directlly from our house to the Great Meadow. We will be there by 9:15.

I might need to hitch a ride over that last mile of questionable road. :) See you at the Great Meadow.

I'm going to have to pass. I've been sick this last week, and was hoping I'd feel better this morning. Just woke up, and not so much:( I don't think I'd make 10 miles in the sun. Sorry for the last minute bail.

Did several miles today on Blue Canyon Trail and Cat Hill Way. It was beautiful. Passed 8 lakes, saw 6 mosquitoes, 7 deer, lots of huckleberries and 1 bear. Looking forward to tomorrow! See ya' then.

Yeah, last mile is pretty rough but not impassible. At least you don't have to ford the stream at this time. Just take it slow.

It takes about 45 min from both Ashland and Medford to reach the Great Meadows. Whichever group gets there first can avail themselves of the rest rooms. From there it's about a 5 min drive to the Cold Springs turn off, and then 10 miles of dirt roads. The last mile is questionable for low slung vehicles.

Please note, we will be using an abandoned trail and not the Cold Springs TH.
At this time of year the mosquitoes are down to a dull roar, but you might want to bring bug spray just in case.

Sounds like a great hike. Mike and I would like to join the group. We have room for two in our car - leaving from Ashland about 8:10.

I would like to catch a ride with you if there is still room. Meet at Shop'n Kart at 8:10am?

Sounds like great excursion David. Approximately how many miles to trailhead from Ashland, and how far off paved road? Thanks, Lee

On the way back from Klamath Falls on Thursday afternoon, I stopped at the Cold Spring trailhead and talked to a group of Forest Service employees about any fires in the Sky Lakes area. They said all were under control and there were no trail closures in Sky Lakes. Sounds good - see you all on Saturday.

With two days of possible storms coming I'll do a drive by Friday to check out conditions. The current fires here are small and contained.

Must not be going in from Saddle Camp. Fire at Smith Rock and McKee Basin.

    August 11, 2014

  • Debbie G.

Launch Fire...as per PCT Association on August 5th..."a human caused fire...centered on the east side of Four Mile Lake. The PCT was not closed and the areas that were have been re-opened." That is the info I have found. If there is more let me know. This incident according to the map is only at Four Mile Lake shoreline and should not bother our hike. If needed later in the week I'll do a drive by.

    Active fire in the area!
