Hike: Turtle Back-Reservoir-Zoo Loop

Saturday, May 11:10a.m.-1 p.m:

Turtle Back-Reservoir-Zoo Loop. This hike follows a combination of hiking trails and gravel roads, then bushwacks 100 yards down to the path along the Orange Reservoir.

We will circle back via Northfield Ave. near the zoo and take a recently completed hiking trail (part of the planned Reservoir-Zoo Loop, not yet on the map) back toward the picnic area. 3 miles with moderate grades at a moderate pace.

Meet at the Turtle Back Picnic Area off of Walker Rd. in W. Orange. From the zoo, driving east on Northfield Ave., turn right on Walker Rd., the second traffic light beyond the parking garage. Drive 0.2 mile to the entrance to the park on the right.

Leader: Dennis Percher,[masked]-6994.

We will have the hike, unless there is steady rain (not just drizzling). Bring rain jackets!

A beginner in reasonable shape can easily do this hike. The route is around 3 miles (we may add another half mile to see Turtleback Rock if people are interested). The bushwhacking will involve going down an easy slope where no trail has yet been constructed (that will happen in June by the Trail Work Crew). There is no "whacking of bushes" to make a path; it is clear.

That sounds about right at a very leisurely pace. It is around 2.5 miles and nothing is super steep or rough going except perhaps that short bushwack.

What is bushwacking? Would I need to bring anything special?
