Hike: Edible plants walk

Join local forager, Dan Lipow, for a 5-6 mile moderately paced hike, over relatively level terrain, as we focus on wild food. A loop hike: Tulip Springs>Shady Nook>Oakdale>Turtle Back Zoo>River Road>Tulip Springs. Dan will share his knowledge of edible plants and fungi as frequent stops are made to learn and collect nature's bounty. Berries, mushrooms, & greens will hopefully fill the bags and containers you bring with you. Snacks and plenty of water recommended. Meet at Tulip Springs off of Cherry Lane. Drive north from the intersection of S. Orange Ave. and Cherry Lane 0.4 miles and turn right, or 0.8 miles south of the intersection of Pleasant Valley Way and Northfield Ave. and turn left. Immediately after the turn off of Cherry Lane, turn right to Tulip Springs. Leader: Dan Lipow[masked]-4447.

    Dan,

Thanks for running what apparently was a very popular hike, in spite of the heat. We will need to schedule more in the fall, if you are willing, and limit the numbers. Thanks,

    Dennis.

Hi Dennis. Glad the hike was such a success. I spoke with Dave H. and we are looking at dates in late Sept. and early Oct. Let's talk to figure out how to organize and set a reasonable limit? Call or email anytime.

Thank you to all 45 hikers! I am humbled to know how many of you out there are yearning for foraging knowledge. Giving each of you individual attention was obviously impossible yesterday but I look forward to seeing many of you in the future on other hikes. I will keep you all posted on other upcoming dates when we can hopefully come home with more goodies. (p.s. - there will be a maximum number of participants for future foraging hikes)
    Many Thanks!

Dan, thanks for doing such a great job explaining about the edible plants today. I found this recipe for root beer if anyone is interested in making root beer. I haven't tried the recipe but it looks fairly simple. http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/homemade_sassafras_root_beer/

how many bags & containers do we need? Should it be all bags or all containers or both?

    July 6, 2013

    • Dan L.

several bags of different sizes for mushrooms and plant matter, and a few pint/quart containers for berries(if we get lucky!)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
