Road trip to Coney Island!
It's the Mermaid Parade, the largest Arts parade in the country, and the 7th largest public event in NYC. It's a little known secret that draws just our group, and over 500,000 others. http://www.coneyisland.com/programs/mermaid-parade
You can do this on your own, or try to meet up with the group. The parade itself starts at 1pm at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue. We'll be getting there a few hours earlier to shoot the staging area, and staying a bit after the parade to shoot the crowds.
We will not be doing this in organized carpools, or anything like that. Joe and I plan on taking a train from Hamilton, then catching the subway out to Coney Island. As we get closer to the event, and we know what train we're catching, we'll post it; those interested can meet us at the station. Otherwise, people can travel up on their own. For a second meetup opportunity, we'll probably pick a time/place up there where we'll hang around for about 15 minutes if people want to find us.
This is a loooong day, so dress/pack appropriately (last year we left at 6am, and didn't get home til after 9:30). Bring water (multiple bottles), bring extra batteries, wear comfortable clothes and shoes, wear sun screen and a hat.
For those who want to travel with us, we'll be catching the 7:24 am train out of Hamilton. Round trip train fare (for those who aren't Senior Citizens) is $30. Parking in Hamilton is $7 for the day. There will also be subway fare, and if you want a ticket to the staging area (not needed, but helpful) you can buy it at Coney Island... not sure the price, last year they were $20.
