GETTING TO KNOW YOUR COMMUNITY IS AS EASY AS RIDING A BIKE
Founded in January 2007, the Southbay Cruisers host social bicycle rides and bicycling events in the beach cities of Los Angeles,CA including Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, El Segundo, Torrance, Lawndale, and Manhattan Beach. The Southbay Cruisers are made up primarily of a group of Southbay recreational bicycle riders and bicycle commuters. We believe that people riding their bicycles in the streets of the Southbay are a good thing. We live in the community and we ride in the community. Southbay Cruiser bike rides are free and open to anyone that can respect the communities we ride through. (If you are under 16 years of age, please come with a parent or guardian.) Everyone helps each other out on Southbay Cruiser bike rides. The Southbay Cruisers are not a gang, nor are we a ‘pub crawl’. We’re just people in the community that enjoy a night ride through the Southbay Cities of Los Angeles.CA. (You don’t need a cruiser style bike by the way. Any kind of bicycle will do on our rides-mountain bike, tandem, tall bikes, foldies, road bikes, cruisers...they are all good on our rides. You can even skate with us instead if you like. We ride during the day too!)
The Southbay Cruisers are made up largely of bicycle commuters and recreational cycists in the Southbay cities of Los Angeles,CA. We ride through the streets of our community because it's a fun thing to do. Anyone can join our group provided that they can respect the communities that we ride through. If you are under 16 years of age, please come to our rides with a parent or guardian.
WHO MAKES A GOOD SOUTHBAY CRUISER?
Anyone who likes to have a good time riding with a group, and who can also follow our rules below.
RULES OF THE RIDE:
*No alcohol or drug consumption on our rides.
*No littering or other illegal behavior.
*We take the RIGHT Lane so that cars can pass us on the left lane. We take the left lane only when we are making a left turn, or when a safety hazard prohibits us from riding safely in the right lane.
*Come prepared with a bicycle in good working order - with a white bicycle headlight, a rear red reflector, reflectors on your wheels, and a white reflector on the front of your bike. California State Law requires this. Please see:
for more info. (You can purchase a light at one of our rides if you want.)
*If under 18 years of age you must wear a helmet. See this link for details: http://www.dmv.ca.gov...
*If under 16 years of age you must bring a parent or guardian.
*Help your Southbay Cruisers out along the way. We don't leave anyone behind.
*No Attitudes-Respect the communities we ride through, and the people we ride with.
[b]YOU CAN PURCHASE A HEADLIGHT or REAR RED BLINKY FOR YOUR BIKE AT THE RIDE
We have a limited # of Planet Bike head lights with batteries that you can purchase at the ride for $10. Planet Bike donates 25% of it's profits back to the biking community. Red Blinkies are also $10 with batteries. If you want one of these lights please send me an email reminder that you would like one before the ride.
Night riding offers a new set of challenges so be prepared. The Southbay Cruisers do the best we can to choose routes which offer minimal automobile traffic along the way. But we can’t emphasize enough that to enjoy a safe ride at night you need to plan ahead. The Southbay Cruisers encourage you to bring the following to our night rides:
A bicycle headlight, rear red reflector, reflectors on your wheels, pedals, and the front of your bike.
A rear red blinky (two is even better-one on your bike & another on your body)
A helmet, gloves & reflective clothing (If you are under 18 in California, the law requires that you wear a helmet.)
A patch kit, pump, tire levers, and an extra tube should you get a flat along the way. (You could probably borrow someone’s pump and tire levers, but at least make the $3 investment for a patch kit)
California laws currently require that you have a headlight on your bike at night, and for good reason. It’s very difficult for an oncoming car to see you unless you have one on.
Side visibility at night is just as important as being seen from the front and back of your bike. Therefore in addition to having a rear red reflector, you should also have reflectors on your wheels. California Law requires that you have these reflectors on your bike. Besides, they could save your life.
ADDITIONAL INFO ABOUT ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION ON THE RIDE: Just to reiterate it's NOT OK for you to consume alcohol while on our rides. We are NOT about that. We are not a "pub crawl" or a "booze cruise". We do not promote alcohol or drug usage while on our rides. We're not against drinking alcohol. In fact, some of us grab a bite to eat and a drink or two after the ride is over. But we don't want you to get drunk while riding with us, as riding a bicycle at night on the streets can be dangerous enough, without being drunk. We want you to come enjoy our ride, and return home safely so that you can come back and enjoy another ride with us again.
WARNING: Please note that riding a bike, especially at night, is an inherently dangerous activity. The Southbay Cruisers do the best we can to choose routes with minimal automobile traffic, but we cannot guarantee your safety. The Southbay Cruisers aren't a bike touring company, nor do we have any special permits or insurance from any of the cities that we ride through. The Southbay Cruisers are just a community group. The Southbay Cruisers strongly suggest that you familiarize yourself with the rules of the road, come prepared with lights and flashers, and have your bicycle inspected by a qualified bike mechanic before showing up to the ride. The Southbay Cruisers do not ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Southbay Cruisers strongly discourage you from littering along the way, or performing any other illegal behavior while on our cruiser rides. If you are under 16 years of age please bring a parent or guardian. Ride at your own risk.
