SCAPA Dinner, Meeting & Presentation

Join us for the monthly gathering of the South County Airport Pilots Association. We start with a social hour at 5:30 PM, dinner* at 6, a business meeting at 6:45, and this featured speaker presentation at 7 PM:

The Civil Air Patrol: Search and Rescue, and More

This evening we will learn about the Civil Air Patrol, how search and rescue works, and what it’s like to be a CAP pilot from two members of the squadron based at Reid-Hillview Airport.

Founded in 1941 just days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Civil Air Patrol started out protecting America's shores against enemy submarine attack. After the war, the volunteer organization's role changed to search and rescue. CAP still performs 95% of all inland search and rescue for missing aircraft, and over the years it has broadened its service role.

Our speakers will share their experience and the varied missions of the Civil Air Patrol:

  • reconnaissance missions for homeland security
  • search and rescue
  • disaster relief and damage assessment
  • emergency personnel transport
  • counterdrug operations at the request of government or law enforcement agencies

During all missions, safety plays a major role. We will learn how CAP maintains a culture of safety, and what you, as pilots, can do to increase your own safety, both in everyday situations and in emergencies.

Our speakers:

CAP Major Coby Sena has been a member of Civil Air Patrol for seven years and recently completed a three year term as Commander, San Jose Squadron 80, based at Reid-Hillview Airport. She is a SAR mission pilot, Urban Direction Finding qualified, and a base Mission Radio Operator.

CAP Major John Lewis has been a member of CAP since 1996 and currently serves as a Check Pilot, SAR mission pilot, and Aircraft Manager for Squadron 80.

*Dinner is $15 members, $20 non-members.)
