Join us for the monthly gathering of the South County Airport Pilots Association. We gather and socialize at 5:30 PM, serve dinner* at 6, hold a business meeting at 6:45, and we provide this featured speaker presentation at 7 PM.
Electric Planes, (Trains) and Automobiles
Modern Lithium-Ion batteries have advanced to a point where they can power a big luxury sedan like the Tesla S, which outperforms nearly all Porsches and BMWs. Soon we will see electric airplanes coming to an airport near us and we can expect a wide variety of new classes of aerial chariots to be made possible by electric propulsion.
The talk will cover electric motors, advanced battery technologies (Lithium-ion and far beyond, such as Lithium-air), examples of electric vehicles and electric airplanes, multi-copters and the CAFE challenge. The speaker will make his Tesla S available for show and tell after the talk.

He received a PhD in Nuclear Physics in 1976 and split his working life between a University faculty, IBM Research in Yorktown Heights, NY, a Silicon Valley Startup (HAL), sailing and diving the Caribbean and IBM Research in Almaden. He started the IBM 'Battery 500' project in 2009, an ambitious project to create a powerful new battery technology. Winfried is a SCAPA member, holds a commercial pilot rating and flies a Bonanza A36, Kingair C90, Cessna 172 and 182 and a LS4a glider. He recently published an anthology 'Random Walk' about his (mis)adventures in science, technology, on the sea and in the air.
Guests are welcome!
