(100-130' deep.)
A $10.00 yearly Medallion is requested to dive the artificial reefs in Key Largo. Payment is voluntary at the boat for the medallion.
These dives for OUR GROUP will cost $70.00 per diver, includes 2 - 80cf air tanks at the boat, plus nitrox tanks if needed ($12.00 each). (There is no discount for bringing your own tanks)
(A 48 hour notice for cancellation is necessary).
AOW certification is required unless the diver has Instructor or Divemaster supervision.
Dive computers are required for these DEEP dives and are available to rent with ample notice.
From Elray's Dive Shop in Pompano Beach it is a 97 mile (1 hr and 50 min) trip so it is important to plan your trip down appropriately from your leaving location. Please check out http://www.silentworldkeylargo.com/directions.html if you have any questions about directions. I am sure we can work out a carpool once we have an idea who is coming. Please don't leave any vehicles unattended at El'Ray's if you carpool. Thanks for your understanding.

These dives can be done as part of the pay as you go advanced program. We have 2 Instructors available for these dives! Dave and Brian! http://www.meetup.com/southfloridadiving/calendar/11088626/

Check out the photos from the last Key Largo trip: http://www.meetup.com/southfloridadiving/photos/636883/#9172619

One of our (awesome) meetup members, danwbeery, requested to do a dive at Lauderdale by the Sea. Here is what he said regarding the location:

Lauderdale by the sea is one of the most amazing reefs I have seen anywhere. I have seen 12 foot nurse sharks at this site, as well as turtles, tarpon and an amazing bait ball with tarpon (see this link I took there not long ago). The best part about it is that it is about 40 yards from shore so there is no big surface swim as with the Pompano ledge. This dive is all in 15 to 20 feet of water so it is great for beginners or people who need a bit of confidence building.

The only problem with this dive site is that parking is a real issue. If you get there much after 8:30 there is no chance of finding parking. Parking is $1 / hr and you need quarters (bring $3 worth to be safe).

IT IS A REALLY GOOD IDEA TO BUDDY UP ON CARS (ride share) TO SIMPLIFY THE PARKING. USE THE COMMENT AREA TO HOOK UP ANY RIDE SHARES.

We should all meet at the Datura beach shower / shelter at Datura about 2 blocks south of Commercial Blvd (3 miles south of ElRays). The little lot at Datura will probably already be full so look for street parking on Datura or perhaps down a block on Hibiscus (it is not a long walk, even with gear) Make sure to bring plenty of quarters. Also if you will be needing a tank, flag, or other gear please say it in a comment so I can be sure to bring it for you. If you don't already know danwbeery he will be the guy with the outrageously large PVC dive flag. I hope to see you all there for another great dive!

Also, danwbeery was even nice enough to post a youtube video about the dive - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt7vxJ4R6yI

Get ready for another striking, stunning, stupefying, stupendous, splendid, and spectacular Saturday morning beach dive at 8th Street. Grab your gear and park at (great!) Greg's house. Any equipment needed will be available to borrow, as long as you request it IN ADVANCE in your RSVP Comment. WATER TEMP IS 82 DEGREES. Make sure to get plenty of rest before the dive. It is around a 30 minute swim to the drop-off, which is the first reef (25ft. - 30ft. deep). If it has been a while since your last dive you can always hang out around the broken reef which is closer in. (15ft. - 20ft. deep) We encourage you to take pictures to put up on the meet up group. If you have any questions or suggestions please let me (Bianca) know.

Despite the recent events, we will keep diving! For this dive I thought we could change it up. Diving in Dania! I went diving there this past Friday and it was a lot of fun (I also caught a HUGE lobster)! We have the option of either diving the Seatech ledge or the Erojacks. The Seatech ledges are one of the highest, most incredible reef ledges within beach diving distance in South Florida; it is deeply undercut and covered with coral and invertebrates in only 20ft maximum depth. The Erojacks are hundreds of concrete Erojacks placed as an artificial reef in very shallow water. This makes a great snorkeling or diving location as the depths run from 20ft in the sand to 10ft on top of the Erojacks. The structures run east and west terminating into a shallow (12ft) reef that runs north and south. Many bottom dwellers lay under the Erojacks and larger schooling fish hide when chased by predators among its nooks and crannies. I saw a school of ten huge angelfish there (I usually only see angelfish by themselves or with 2 or three others, never 10!) The directions are basically the same for both: From I-95 go East on Griffin to US1 South to Dania Beach Blvd go over bridge and veer right exit the circle ramp into the public beach parking lot. There are meters so bring money for the parking, other than that the dive is free! If you wanna dive the EroJacks go as far North as you can park (without parking in the restaurant parking) and walk about few hundred yards north of Dania pier. When diving there you can start at the Jacks and go east towards the end of the Jacks till you reach the reef. Then follow the reef South so you don't have to walk much after the dive. For the Seatech ledges park at the southern most spaces and enter at southern edge of the public beach. I will be there at 8:30, so you can wait for me if you want. If not, write a comment saying at what time you'd want to go and maybe someone else will want to go at the same time and can buddy up with you. Also, we will still be able to provide some gear, just let me know ahead of time (please try to tell me by Tuesday night) what you will need so that I can bring it or somehow arrange it. I hope to see you all there! Let me know if you need more information!
Thanks, Bianca
