Drinks, FREE Movie and Popcorn: Captain Philips @ The Grove pub (Balham)

  • Feb 17, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Join me at the beautiful Grove pub in Balham (between Balham & Clapham South tube stations) for an evening of  FREE cinema and FREE popcorn.

Located in their main restaurant area, they convert the whole place into a cinema screening area with a big screen.

The plan:

Lets Meet at 7pm for drinks/A quick bite to eat for the hungry ones & a bit of socialising before the free movie with popcorn at 8pm - Captain Philips

The Film:Captain Philips

134min  - Adventure,  Biography, Drama (October 2013)

Directed by Paul Greengrass.   Starring:Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Barkhad Abdirahman...

Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the
U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is - through
director Paul Greengrass's distinctive lens - simultaneously a pulse-pounding
thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The
film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer,
Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks), and the
Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and
Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target
Phillips' unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast,
both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

Pleae note:  Only RSVP for this event if you can make it!!!   I fully understand that  with all the right intentions, your plans may still change, however I do expect you to be fair and considerate to others by making sure you keep your RSVP up to date!  Doing so will give other members a real chance of joining us, if there are spaces available.  However, changing your RSVP  at the last minute or simply failing to actually turn up, (No Shows) obviously does not count as being considerate or  fair  and is  frustrating for other members and myself included!

Food and drinks available all evening; NOT FREE of course!

It was good to rejoin the group and meet new people, so many perspectives from an interesting bunch. Rachel as usual was a great host and very very good with names. The movie was riveting and very emotional nice to see it not overdramatised as I felt more part of the story

Thank you to everyone that attended. It was fabulous to meet you all - lovely bunch of people. Thank you for your lovely comments - verbal and posted here.
The film was brilliant - very realistically created and acted. Like Dee Dee said, it was not my usual type of film but I was totally absorbed and engrossed. Very intense film. Jack son, aka stephann aptly described it as captivating which summed it up well. I just wished like many of you that the ending with Captain Philips was extended.
Hope to see you all again soon.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
