Why: The film festival is a blast!

Meeting Description: If you've never been to the film festival before, you don't know what to been missing! Right here in our own backyard you have the opportunity see over 130 movies from all over the world. It only comes once a year for 10 days, so don't miss your chance to see films from Spain, Argentina, Venezuela or elsewhere. All the films that I've chosen are in Spanish with English subtitles. I'm going to be at all of these films, if you'd like to join me I will wait in the hallway just outside of the ticket lobby from 30 minutes to 15 minutes before the film starts. You can buy tickets on the day of the film, but sometimes there is a chance of sellouts. You can check out all the details at the website for the film festival:Cleveland Film Society.

I am posting three different nights that I am going to the film festival. Please join me at any or all of the films if you are interested. Please check all three different dates as the films are different. The first two nights I am going to see two films in a row (come see either one or both), the last one is just a single film. There is a food court, right next to Tower City Cinemas, and restaurants such as Hard Rock Cafe. Parking is free for the event, but you need to bring your parking ticket to get it validated at the theater.

Late-night double feature

XXY showtime at 10:00 PM

ARGENTINA, SPAIN

Directed by Luc?a Puenzo
Running time: 89 minutes

The XXY condition, the term used to describe males with an extra X chromosome, is one of the most commonly found chromosome abnormalities in humans ? about one in every 500 males have this condition, but many do not show any symptoms. The XXY condition can sometimes be a painful and self-questioning conundrum, as in the case of Alex, who is a hermaphrodite. She has been raised as a girl since birth, but is now, at puberty, being made to ?choose? her sex by her parents. She is forced into considering the removal of her penis when her parents invite a plastic surgeon to their home to discuss her future. But the potential operation is not the only complication for Alex, she strikes up a friendship with the plastic surgeon?s teenage son, ?lvaro?who it seems is as confused about sex and sexuality as is Alex. As we watch Alex and ?lvaro discover their true selves, we find that their parents are more confused and fearful of the truth than the teenagers. The parent?s prejudices and beliefs on what is right and natural unknowingly hurt the children more than they could possibly know. The only non-judgmental viewpoint comes from the filmmaker herself who allows the story to unreel openly and gracefully, which opens the door to tolerance and understanding. (In Spanish with English subtitles)

Timecrimes showtime at midnight

SPAIN

Directed by Nacho Vigalondo
Running time: 89 minutes

While surveying the landscape of his country estate, Hector spies through his binoculars-- could it be?-- a nude woman in the woods adjacent to his property. In his attempt to investigate this woman?s mysterious presence, he is drawn unknowingly into a bizarre science experiment. On his way to find the woman, he is attacked by an inexplicable zombie-like figure whose head is wrapped in pink gauze. As he flees, he takes cover in a laboratory close to the woods, where the attendant/scientist invites him in. In the laboratory, Hector is ushered into a scientific device. He emerges thinking it is only minutes later, when in fact, it is hours earlier. The hours unfold as Hector encounters different versions of himself and an increasingly complicit and intricate story, all of which he is trying to rectify before time runs into the present. Science fiction meets classic crime drama in TIMECRIMES, a tense, unstoppable vision of science and natural law gone awry. (In Spanish with English Subtitles)
