Kids Learn Beginner Robot Programming at Chicago Museum of Science & Industry

This will be our seventh Sphero Rangers meetup teaching kids how to program Sphero – and we’re going national! The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago is hosting our first event outside of Colorado.

If you don't know much about Sphero - check out this video or visit our website.

The Sphero programming class is free with General Admission to the MSI. MSI admission is $18 for Adults and $11 for Children ages 3-11 (Chicago residents are $15 Adults/ $10 children.)We’ll make sure you have plenty of time to both explore the museum and learn with the robots.

This event is 2 hours long. This class will be for younger kids - 4th grade to 7th grade, or those just getting their feet wet with programming. We will teach a more advanced section for 8th graders through high school at another timeslot. This is just a guideline - happy to have kids with different skills sit in a group best aligned with their abilities.

The younger group will focus on learning to program Sphero using an app called MacroLab. It is a simple Android/iOS app that lets the kids write visual scripts to program Sphero to change colors and drive geometric patterns.

Skills learned / reinforced: angles, basic geometry, top down programming, understanding time vs. distance traveled, heading angles, loops, and problem solving. It is a great way for kids to apply lessons in school to a real world object. No previous experience or knowledge of Sphero is necessary.

Instruction will happen for about an hour then kids will work on a series of challenges at their own pace but have instructors available to assist. Please try to arrive on time - if you'll be late don't worry, we can bring you up to speed but you might have to wait until the formal presentation is done.

BRING your own iOS or Android device if you have one - if not, one will be provided. We'll provide the Spheros.

PLEASE SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS - just let us know how many are coming in your RSVP.
We would like to thank the staff at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago for being so generous and opening up their facility to help us out. We can’t wait to meet our Chicago Rangers!

My kids are still talking about the class. They had so much fun and said the instructors were "awesome". We will definitely be buying a Sphero (or two!). Great Meetup.

Thanks for confirming I did this correctly! My kids are really looking forward to the class. They both like electronics and building things — especially my 10 yr old. And just to clarify, my 8 yr old will be 9 in a matter of weeks so I'm not worried. She loves mathy stuff. Thanks again. I think they will have fun.

That's awesome! We love meeting new kids who are into math! Adam, one of our co-founders will be presenting with me, he loves nothing more than teaching math concepts. I'm sure he'd love to discuss math, robotics, and technology with your daughter!

The reservation page was not responding. I would like to hold two spots for my children ages 9 and 11 for Sunday, July 21st. I'm not sure if a confirmation will be sent, but a reply would be appreciated. Also, what is the price of the actual Sphero? I'm sure once they know how to program it, they will be asking to purchase one>

    July 11, 2013

    • Jenica

Hi Dana, I do see your reservation. I don't see the registrations for the kids though. You can edit the RSVP by going to the top of this page where a green box wil indicate you've RSVP'd. Click "Change RSVP" and add 1 to the + box if just your children will be attending or add 2 to the + box if you will attend with your children.

Sphero retails for $129.99 and will be available at the MSI gift shop.
