  • Ride Name: This Ride is All about Akron
Trail: Towpath Trail: Wilbeth Road – Portage Path – Wilbeth Road
    Rating: Intermediate
    Ride Type: Out and Back
    Distance: 16.4 miles roundtrip

Mounting your saddle at the Metro Parks Wilbeth Road trailhead, you turn north onto the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Cycling past factories and a salt mine, your tires rattle as they roll across the floating Towpath along the shores of Summit Lake. I-76/I-77 towers above you as you cycle across the Interbelt and into Downtown Akron.

Passing Locks 3 & 4, you cycle across the Interbelt bridge and begin the descent along the Ohio and Erie Canal approaching Mustill Store. Through Cascade Locks Metro Park, you cycle along the Little Cuyahoga under Memorial Parkway. At Big Bend where the Little Cuyahoga and Cuyahoga Rivers join, you climb the serpentine boardwalk thru Sand Run Metro Park. The Portaging Indian greets you at Portage Path where you turn your bike south tracing your tire tracks to the Wilbeth Road trailhead.

Out and back rides are designed with the intermediate and advanced cyclist in mind. These rides cycle out of a trailhead to a set destination, typically 8-10 miles away. After a break, the riders cycle back to the departure trailhead.

Tonight’s ride travels at 10-12 mph and typically takes 2 hours including photo-ops and rest stops. The ride is rated for leisure cyclists who enjoy cycling 10-12 mph on flat trails with an occasional hill or elevation gain. The trail surface is mixed with areas of both asphalt and packed limestone. It is relatively flat with some moderate elevation changes. The ride should be a comfortable ride for the intermediate cyclist.

This ride is on the calendar of the Spin-off Cyclists . We encourage you to join us on this and other rides. We are a group of cyclists of all ages and abilities who cycle the trails of Northeast Ohio and surrounding areas for fun, health and friendship.

I take it we're calling this one due to severe weather in the area?

Easy to find and obvious. It is about 1/4 mike west of Main Street on Wilbeth. It is on the south side of Wilbeth. It's a large parking lot well marked.

Should be there unless works delays me. Also, is it okay if I bring my daughter to tow along in the trailer?

    • John M

Sure - she'll probably have lots of fun. The group usually travels anywhere between 8-12MPH so if you can maintain that speed with a trailer you'll have no trouble with the ride.

Yep, that won't be a problem. Thanks and look forward to meeting everyone.
