Map:

Have you ever wanted to ride the entire Ohio and Erie Canal towpath trail? Bike ride the complete Towpath trail from Harvard Road to Zoar in 4 segments. This type of bike ride is for the seasoned cyclist. Bike riding time is approximately 4 – 5 hours and the average distanced biked is 37 miles. The average speed is 10-12 mph.

We meet at the Mustill Store Trailhead located off West North Street at 248 Ferndale St. Akron, for this 37 mile ride to Harvard Road. Return to the Rockside Road trailhead and ride the 1:00 pm Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad back to Akron. Lunch stop if there is time. There is a fee for the train ride.

The Towpath Trail passes through woodlands during most of this ride. We will cross under Portage Path and up to the ever-popular Beaver Marsh before heading into Peninsula and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We enter the heart of the park heading north out of Peninsula crossing a meandering boardwalk and underneath the Ohio Turnpike and I-271 bridges before reaching the Boston Store Visitor’s Center. We cycle along the remains of the paper factory in Jaite and through the woods on our way to the Stations Road Trailhead at Brecksville.

The scenery changes as we ride into the open valley along Canal Road with the Canal Visitor’s Center to our left before we cycle under Rockslide Road. We enter an urban landscape as we cycle under I-480 and into the industrial areas of Cuyahoga Heights where the Towpath ends at Harvard Road. Cycling back to Rockside Road and Station, we will board the 1:00 Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train to the Akron Northside Station.

Out and back rides are designed with the intermediate and advanced cyclist in mind. These rides cycle out of a trailhead to a set destination, typically 8-10 miles away. After a break, the riders cycle back to the departure trailhead.

This ride travels at 11-13 mph. The ride is rated for leisure cyclists who enjoy cycling 11-13 mph on flat trails with an occasional hill or elevation gain. The trail surface is mixed with areas of both asphalt and packed limestone. It is relatively flat with some moderate elevation changes. The ride should be a comfortable ride for the intermediate cyclist.

This ride is on the calendar of the Spin-off Cyclists . We encourage you to join us on this and other rides. We are a group of cyclists of all ages and abilities who cycle the trails of Northeast Ohio and surrounding areas for fun, health and friendship.
