Today’s ride travels the Akron length of the Towpath We begin our trek at the Mustill Store Trailhead in Cascade Lock Metro Park on North Street. Get ready for some uphill riding as we climb to cross the Interbelt into Lock 3 Park in Downtown Akron. We cycle along the canal behind Canal Park where the Aeros are often playing as we pass. We pass behind the Spaghetti Warehouse and through the Channelwood area and crossing the Interbelt at Thorton Street.
Cycling under I-76 takes us to Summit Lake Park. We’ll pass along the shores and ride the floating bridge to the overlook. This overlook is one of the most beautiful places to take a break on the Akron Towpath. Passing the Wilbeth Road Trailhead, we cycle south along the canal through South Akron. We’ll pass the blue heron rookery and under I-277. Riding under Manchester Road, we get a nice view of Nesmith Lake.
The trail becomes quite natural at this point. The Towpath will be to our right and the Tuscarawas River in the woods to our left. Ducks, herons, and geese are abundant on this section of the trail. At Snyder Avenue, we cycle the newest section of the towpath through the abandoned PPG lime lakes.
We cross Vanderhoof and Center Roads as we approach Clinton. Just north of Clinton is an interesting collection of locks that make an interesting stop along the trail. We continue through the small village of Clinton and into Stark County. We cycle into Heritage Park, home of the St. Helena Canal Boat, in Canal fulton.
