New Year's Eve Icicle Bicycle Ride (Now a Hike)

UPDATE: The Towpath is snow covered due to our recent heavy snows. We will hike the Towpath rather than bike it. I have changed the location to Mustill Store. The trail is much more scenic. We will hike north to Big Bend. -- Tom

Our New Year's Eve tradition returns for a 2nd year! The Icicle Bicycle Ride gives us a chance to pedal out 2012 as a group. Every year, cyclists in the Pittsburgh area gather on New Year’s Day for a bike ride, regardless of weather conditions. Thy call it the Icicle Bicycle Ride. It seems like a cool idea (actually quite cold idea). Let’s give it a try and see how many hardy cyclists we have. It beats taking off our clothes and jumping into an icy lake!

In the event of subzero temps or unsafe trail conditions due to snow and ice, we will hike the Towpath. Looking for a memorable way to end the year? This is the ride for you.

Wanted to update folks. We are not meeting as a group at Valley Cafe. You are still welcome to meet there if you like. A few of us are meeting at Wally Waffle in Tallmadge (corner of Eastwood and South Avenue (Route 91) next to Acme. We are meeting there at 8:30 AM. Join us if you want.

Here's the thing... I want to try to get out and ride during the winter, but I absolutely cannot stand the cold! Anyone have any good recommendations for cold weather cycling gear?

  Hi Luke, Bicycling magazine had a nice article about cold weather riding. It was right before you article. Then Nashbar.com has great prices on cycling clothing. I purchased a jacket from there this year and love it. Just have to watch for sizing, someone need to make a standard for the industry.
