Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix narrates this powerful award-winning examination of mankind's dependence on animals. The film delves into the food, entertainment and medical industries' use of animals and links each to the world economy. Unflinching footage, some shot by hidden cameras, explores slaughterhouses, puppy mills, factory farms and medical labs and reveals the roles they play in perpetuating society's disrespect for animals.
Review
"This is a rather graphic documentary, it doesn't hold back. This film is about us, or what the film calls "earthlings", inhabitants of earth, along with the countless amount of other species. It is about us, and how we put our own interests above the interests of other animals. It is about the sheer exploitation of animals in five aspects, food, clothing, entertainment, science and sometimes, pets. So, one might ask oneself, "do I really WANT to see this"? One can simply do what a majority of us do every day and turn the other way. "If we don't see it, it doesn't happen". We can be ignorant and continue to live in a state of denial, or we can watch it, and get a glimpse into a small fraction of the daily exploitation of animals. We can see some of the truth behind the actions. It can really put one's way of life into perspective. Ultimately, it may bring us closer back to our true compassionate nature. It may be enough to cause one to make a change. One might be able to look at another animal, without species-ism. This is another living breathing animal, not a commodity or a piece of property. After all, aren't we all sentient beings?"
