We are the first local chapter of the Spiritual Naturalist Society; a national/international non-profit organization dedicated to the exploration, development, and promotion of spiritual naturalism, and promoting happiness through compassion, reason, and practice.

We have a naturalistic and rational scientific worldview, but pursue the flourishing life through various contemplative practices. Influences and inspirations include (but are not limited to) philosophic Buddhism, Zen, Stoicism, Socrates, Epicurus, Confucius, Taoism, Spinoza, Emerson, and the awe-inspiring natural universe revealed through cosmology, complex systems theory, and other sciences.

All seekers are welcome, whether you are completely new and have many questions, or you are well versed in contemplative philosophies. Please note that none of us are 'gurus' or authorities - simply moderators and organizers! The organizers are involved in this because we want to learn and share along with everyone else. Our monthly conversations are casual and not debates, but shared learning experiences. We try to cultivate an attitude of listening and understanding rather than a debating or judging approach.

While everyone is welcome at our events and we hope they are helpful to you, you may decide you are not where you prefer to be if you misunderstand what we are about. By 'Naturalism' we do not merely mean lovers of Nature. We do not have supernatural beliefs or beliefs not based on empirical evidence. For your information, here are some things which are not compatible with our views, or which we are not interested in at our events for other reasons:

    The Afterlife

    Literal personified god/s or spirits

    Psychic powers

"The Law of Attraction" or other claims to be able to affect reality through thought alone

Belief that science conspires to hide the truth or other anti-science notions

Generally, claims beyond what have been widely proven empirically (things beyond or in contradiction to what appears in your school science book)

Reasons why naturalists shouldn't be naturalists

    Conspiracy theories

We do not tell others what they should believe or not believe, and we do not deny the possibility of these things. But claiming any of them fact without empirical evidence is contrary to our practices and not part of what we address in our events and materials (positively or negatively).  Our events are *for* naturalists and not for inter-faith debate *with* naturalists. Therefore naturalism will be assumed in our topics and materials.

Meetup has allowed me to meet people I wouldn't have met naturally - they're totally different than me.
