Midieval apple jousting... but maybe bigger vegetables nowadays

  • When I was a younger chap in Massachusetts, land of the crab apple, my neighborhood friends and I would gather bags of fallen apples. We would also construct armor out of cardboard and soccer shin guards. We would hang bags of apples off our handlebars, then ride toward each other with bikes, hurling them as hard and as fast as possible. I would imagine nowadays it would hurt a lot more, so I think mandatory helmets and elbow and knee-pads would be required. But some sort of general medieval vegetable-fruit war might be exciting, especially if you just rode towards each other with 1 melon each and played on grass. Maybe even with several events as well. A watermelon distance toss. A cucumber javelin event. Apple accuracy contest. Just a thought - anyone? Bueller? (oh... and one time in college, we had an axe-throwing contest, but did it with an old shower pipe. Similar excitement when trying to hurl an object 25 yards across a lawn into a target... or cardboard box).

I would do it. Why not? I hurl 12#, pear shaped objects across ice rinks. I am available in April, after my world championship ;-) Maybe with a couple of guests . . .
