Message from Stack Overflow:

We've declared April 28, 2012 as the second annual Stack Overflow Meetup Day! Last year over 2,000 of you got involved. It was amazing! This year, we're calling on the entire Stack Exchange tech community* to double that number. We're reaching out to every hacker, programmer and designer in the Stack Exchange family to join their local Stack Overflow Meetup on April 28th.

All you have to do is RSVP and maybe leave a suggestion for where people in your town can meetup. Consider bringing your favorite project to share and get help with, hire a speaker, or have your members do Ignite-style talks where anyone gets a maximum of five minutes to present. No matter what you plan to do, be sure to spread the word! And take photos at your Meetup; we'll be featuring some of our favorite Meetup photos on the Stack Exchange blog.

Note: If your city or town has a group that's interested in meeting but can't do it on a Saturday, please feel free to host an SO Meetup anytime the preceding week. We chose a Saturday based on feedback from last year's attendees, but some people may prefer an after-work meetup, and that's perfectly fine!

And as a last little incentive... The top five Meetups with the most RSVPs and a venue picked out by April 9 will receive a little extra something from us at Stack Exchange HQ.

*Since our network has more than doubled in size during the past year, we're inviting not only Stack Overflow users, but also members of Super User, Server Fault, Programmers, Ask Ubuntu, Unix & Linux, Wordpress, Sharepoint, Game Development, Drupal Answers, DBA, Webmasters, IT Security, SQA, Cryptography, and Code Review! If you're a hacker or programmer of any type who uses one of our tech-related SE sites, please join us.

Yeah, I could probably do quarterly. Monthly is just way too frequent for me, and I have a lot of other things going on in my life.

Quarterly's good for me - that said, if somebody has a connection to someone who'd be fun to have come chat with the group some off-scheduled time, would love to hear about it.

I'll have to get you my pictures when I get a chance. Sometimes it takes me a few days to get around to it, I have a pretty rigorous process for adding photos from my devices to my library :)

I've started compiling a list of people that attended on Twitter:

    https://twitter.com/#!/kylec...

This should make it easier to follow some of the people you met. However, the list is obviously incomplete - my memory isn't perfect, and I can't find accounts for some people that I know attended. Feel free to email or @-message me to have me add someone I missed.

I will be slightly late. The red line is out between Park St and Kendall, currently on the shuttle bus.

Looking forward to tonight (spending the day at SharePoint Saturday for now). To try to help us various geeks meet up... I'll be in jeans and a maroon Penny Arcade shirt (with the controller moves for a Ha-Do-Ken on it).

Ya, SharePoint Saturday is done, so I figured I'd come grab a drink and appetizer. I also discovered that the Telerik license I brought to raffle is worth $2K. So, that's awesome.

If it's not already in the works, I can do a presentation on 'who' our members are, what their scores are, etc. I did that for the Boston Ruby sub-group of SO users last year and it was fun. I already scanned thru some of our usernames and looked at SO profiles. Can folks mention their usernames if they want to be on the list? It would good if our location had an area for that kinda presentation of course.

btw I ALSO have swag to give away from Stack Exchange! tee-hee. I got it last year when I did a presentation. The more the better right? !
I have a little something for everyone to have and also a few things for our top scorers.

      Regards,
      Michael.

I just realized that tomorrow is also SharePoint Saturday at Microsoft in Waltham, which I have to attend. I'll join you guys in the evening if I still have some energy left after 10 hours of SharePoint talk.

We now have some minor swag from Telerik and a license to raffle off! Everyone bring a business card (or some analogue thereof) and we can pick one out of a hat or something equally simple.

We're a little more than two weeks away from our second annual Meetup Everywhere! I hope everyone's planning is going well. Just wanted to remind everyone that I'll be sending a little extra something to the largest meetup groups, and I'll be contacting organizers of those groups in the next couple days - so help us get the word out, and you might receive a care package from Stack Exchange!

What does everyone think of just having a social at The Asgard? Maybe even move the time back into the evening? (So we're not hanging around at a pub from 2 PM into the night.)

I'm going to call the Asgard later today and see if we can reserve a function room (we might be able to do presentations or gaming or whatnot in there) and find out what their rates are for food/drinks. People may not want to pay to go to an SO meetup, but if a few of us are willing to chip in (I would be) or find sponsorship, we could pull it off. I'd rather not have price be a concern for people and focus on putting together a fun and memorable event. If not, then we could just hang out there.

Posted by Matt Chan April 12, 2012
    • Matt Chan's Photo

Okay.... so reserving a function room requires a $1000 minimum total to be spent (before tax and gratuity). I'm not so intent on having a function room unless we get lots of people or can obtain funding of some sort. I am perfectly fine with meeting at Asgard regardless.

I know that Meadhall has a small second floor, including a room behind doors, that I've seen people reserve. Cambridge Brewing Company also has some large spaces that I've seen configured for groups. Both serve food, drinks, and have good service.

Ok, time for me to get off my butt with this. It's Friday afternoon, so I'll break for the weekend. But first thing Monday I'm going to start publicizing this event with local groups. I hate to be a spammer, but I need to get the word out :)

My employer is willing to throw some sponsorship our way. Even offer up our conference room if we want to do gaming/pizza or something like that. (Space is limited, of course, so the number of attendees becomes important.)

I just posted a message in the old event, hopefully that'll email at least some of last year's attendees.

I always forget about that. Either way, I encourage you to just answer a few questions and get that little bit of reputation. (If you're truly new to Stack Overflow, 20 isn't hard to come by. Two answer up-votes will do it.) What better way to encourage the Stack Overflow community than to participate in the site, after all?

I'm interested in helping organize this. Currently I've sent word back to my colleagues to promote the event and call for ideas on venues and/or speakers.

Last year was a lot of fun over at Boston Beer Works, but being on a Saturday this year I think that gives us an opportunity for a more open venue where we can have speakers or some kind of activity.

How about consolidating the Greater Boston community into one large meetup?

Posted by Matt Chan March 26, 2012
    • David P. Donahue's Photo

Definitely. It seems like the Cambridge one is the "main" one, and I'm not sure if the others are abandoned artifacts of previous attempts to create communities or if they're actually actively used.

It's worth noting that this is on the same day as SharePoint Saturday in Waltham. That goes until 6:00, though those have a history of going over by 30-60 minutes for closing session giveaways and such. We may want to consider that when creating a schedule for this meetup.
