Talk about this Meetup
Well, I've been asked to run a "hack-day." in a few months time. Judging from what worked well during the meetup, it's going to have a few masterclasses and a few roundtable discussions.
If you are interested in showing off something totally awesome as part of a masterclass, contact me privately. If you have an interesting stack *exchange* question (not just SO... ::mutter::) that you think could be an interesting round-table, contact me. Contact me if you want to do something else.
Posted by Brian Ballsun-Stanton April 8, 2011For now ;)
Posted by Barry April 9, 2011Due to some work being carried out in the office, we can't host a hack day until July at the earliest. Sorry about this delay in getting you guys together again...
Posted by Brett Morgan April 11, 2011Yeah, thanks heaps, had a great time, hope we can have another meetup some time
Posted by Sam Saffron April 7, 2011That was a pretty awesome meetup! Thanks for the interesting talks and beer discussion, I think it's a format that worked well.
The book I mentioned at the beginning of my talk can be found at http://manning.com/katz
and the outside-in methodology we talked about near the end was at http://cukes.info/
. You don't *have* to use Cucumber to write these tests... it was more to serve as a demonstration of the work flow.
Thanks again!
Posted by Ryan Bigg April 7, 2011This is the book that I talked about in my stand up:
http://www.acceptancetestin...
Highly recommended if you are starting to look at acceptance testing.
Posted by Igor Zevaka April 7, 2011Was a lot of fun, especially talking shop at the PBH afterwards, great people, great conversations, glad I came!
Posted by David van Dugteren April 7, 2011Was an interesting meetup, hopefully we can get a hack day going (obviously it would need some sponsorship for the venue)
Posted by Barry April 6, 2011Can someone advise what the deal is with parking? I've never driven to this area before. Is it busy on a Wednesday night, can you park on the street?
Posted by Matthew Smith April 6, 2011A bit late.. but theres street parking and parking garages near by (including Star City)
Posted by Barry April 6, 2011Wow, lot's of people! Looks like notification bar on SO worked.
Posted by Nikita April 6, 2011I would prefer a more social approach. As an ice breaker, we could each bring our highest scoring question or answer on StackOverflow. I'm basically interested in getting gossip about the kinds of projects people are working on and learning more about the development landscape in Sydney and what's "out there" as I'm new to Sydney.
Posted by Matthew Smith March 31, 2011I agree. Hoping to meet anyone working on their own startup projects as well, so we can share knowledge and experiences.
Posted by Jonathan Conway April 6, 2011The meetup will be on Level 5, 28 Pirrama road, Pyrmont. The building has a big Accenture sign on it. The doors out front are open until six thirty, as are the lifts. Otherwise you can take the stairs up through the central open area.
The are multiple ways to get to the building, including taking the tram to the Casino, the 443, the 448, and walking across the Pyrmont bridge, and down past the Australian National Maritime Museum.
If you can't get in, call me on 0416 241 898
Posted by Brett Morgan April 6, 2011Correction - 48 Pirrama Road, not 28. :)
Posted by Nick Johnson April 6, 2011Food will be there, but I'm not sure about spirits (my first month of employment, didn't discover the cookie jar yet :)). I'll let Brett comment about that.
There's only one entrance in the building (south side), so you won't get lost.
Posted by Nikita April 5, 2011We have food and non-alcoholic drinks. And white boards and projectors. The beer and spirits are at the Pyrmont Bridge Hotel, afterwards. =)
Posted by Brett Morgan April 6, 2011Any more details on what the plan is? I might do a roadtrip from Newcastle...
Posted by Joe Daley April 5, 2011Yup, more info would be good. I'll be leaving work in Wollongong and jumping straight on the train to Sydney. Should I organise to grab some food/beer on the way there? Having never been to the Google HQ before, will it be obvious where to enter the building?
Posted by Dan McGrath April 5, 2011Great stuff, looking forward to meeting you all :)
Btw, the link when you clip the map image takes you to the wrong location :S
Posted by Benjamin Arthur Lupton April 5, 2011I do have a fairly important question to our Google hosts, will beer be provided? or should I bring some with
Posted by Sam Saffron April 4, 2011Can someone take minutes, provide links to any slides or even record the session please...
I have a phone conf with clients in Dublin and the time changes there & here put it smack in the middle of this event, was hoping to get over but no joy...
As for possible dev days suggestions I'd be interested to hear from Sam on the StackOverflow insiders experience from a tech as well as a "movement" POV.
Posted by Eoghan Murphy April 4, 2011One thing we could try to discuss is what we would like in dev days Sydney when it finally arrives.
Posted by Sam Saffron April 3, 2011Yep. We need to discuss the acquisition of unicorns. http://meta.stackoverflow.c...
Posted by Tom Horn April 4, 2011Word is ... I am supposed to get SWAG on Monday.
Posted by Sam Saffron April 3, 2011Also should I contact any more our top users in Sydney? Perhaps they do not know about the meetup. http://data.stackexchange.c...
That's a really good idea, although not all the people provide website or contact information. I wonder if it would be abuse of power for you to fetch emails from internal SO database :)
Posted by Nikita April 3, 2011well quite a few of these people have public sites and contact details and twitter accounts, they should be easy to ping
Posted by Sam Saffron April 3, 2011Well, I'm pretty sure I'll be there now, hopefully I'm not too late. I think a mate from work will be coming too, so that's one more than the official tally.
Posted by Dan McGrath April 3, 2011Awesome. I am looking forward to meeting you guys. An informal thing sounds good to me.
Thanks Brett and Nikita :)
Posted by Tom Horn April 1, 2011Google is good for me.
Posted by Gary Myers April 1, 2011I also vote for google as a venue ... we can always walk to a pub afterwards if we really want to
Posted by Sam Saffron March 31, 2011Does anyone object to Google as a venue? I'm happy with it and think it's best if we try and lock something in as a venue. (Also if you're not happy with Google as a venue, please suggest an alternative)
Posted by Matthew Smith March 31, 2011Ok, Nikita and I are in the process of spinning up catering and the like for this, so if you want to hold it somewhere other than google sydney, speak now or forever hold your peace =)
Posted by Brett Morgan March 31, 2011Hey all, as one of the googlers on this meetup list, and as one of the guys who regularly organises user groups at google, this is a good venue for easy seating and white boards / projectors. For a small crew we can easily do a discussion in the round quite easily.
And once we have eaten the food, we can wander up to the pbh for even more informal discussions. =)
Posted by Brett Morgan March 31, 2011Personally I work and reside around the City/Darling Harbour way... So I'm fine with walking over to Google in Pyrmont, Google soudns like a good spot to host it to me...
Posted by David van Dugteren March 31, 2011I don't drive, and I work in the city. CBD or easily accessible is better for me, preferably the former...
Posted by Margaret March 31, 2011easily accessible by train*
Posted by Margaret March 31, 2011If I were more familiar with Sydney I'd suggest somewhere but it seems logical to pick an inner city suburb for the sake of centrality. Alternatively it would also make sense to go to a less central hub for the sake of parking and being able to get seats (or bar stools). I'm in North Ryde - I'm not sure whether most of the group is north, south, east or west?
Posted by Matthew Smith March 31, 2011Do you still want to do this at google? Some eating venue seems more appropriate in this case. (I suppose they'll still give us conference room, I just don't see what 7-10 people will do with it)
Posted by Nikita March 31, 2011I'm fine with a less formal approach, less work for me. It seems 1 person is interested in formal talks, 2 are interested in an informal approach. Personally, I would prefer not to have a talk in front of only 3 people :)
Nikita, what is the address?
Posted by Sam Saffron March 31, 2011@Matthew Yeah, something less formal also appeals to me.
Posted by Nikita March 31, 2011PS Although, I strongly object to having meetup in C++ :)
@Sam Yes, material side shouldn't be a problem (assuming we have people to speak/listen).

Where is this being held exactly?
Posted by David van Dugteren March 29, 2011Well, the meetup is only a week away. We should try to lock in an agenda:
I can do anything from 15 mins to an hour on performance: http://meta.stackoverflow.c...
We need to decide how many people will be talking, and for how long. We also need to confirm we have a projector and so on (Nikita?).
So ... if we are doing 4-6, 15 minute talks, who will be talking and on what topic? (Talk title please)
Posted by Sam Saffron March 28, 2011I'm primarily a database guy (on the committee of the Sydney Oracle Meetup). Happy to talk for 15-20 minutes on either a database topic or on how our Oracle meetup group works.
Posted by Gary Myers March 25, 2011If it's a Google and we have one or 2 people give some short 'this is what we do' (Sam, awesome offer) I'd be in as would a few others I know from work. If it's just beers, I'll probably have to pass. It's a bit of a hike from Wollongong on the train just for beers. http://stackoverflow.com/us...
Posted by Dan McGrath March 24, 2011A followup. Google will gladly accept us and provide possible help. But we need to decide ourselves what this event will be like and prepare it. Well... ideas are welcome.
Posted by Nikita March 24, 2011I could do a 15-30 min talk about dev at SO if anyone is interested, surely others could talk about some interesting things as well
Unless we want to keep it informal ... lets just catch up for beer ?
Posted by Sam Saffron March 24, 2011I work there and will try to find somebody to talk to. But what are we organizing exactly? I need to be able to explain. http://stackoverflow.com/us...
Posted by Nikita March 24, 2011it would be nice to have a proper venue like google or thought works, does anyone know someone there?
my so user is http://stackoverflow.com/us...
Posted by Sam Saffron March 24, 2011Is this a social "meet in a pub, see who does what" event, or does someone have a bigger idea ?
NB. My Stackoverflow user is
Posted by Gary Myers March 24, 2011http://stackoverflow.com/us...
Might be worth asking Google if they would be up for hosting a meetup?
