You Ran, Leaped, and...Now what?

  • February 12, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Our last meetup went really well with a record turnout of 65 starters.

You should now be inspired to get that idea off the ground, learn about your customer, meet the people around you, and get to hustling. Now what?

Kick off your business right...

We have the pleasure of having 2 of the top local leaders in their profession speaking on operations.

• Andrew Rush - @IPInSpace - www.linkedin.com/in/rushandrew - Andrew has years of experience in intellectual property working with multiple startups. He'll be covering patents, how they work, and what to do to get started.

• Stan Sikorskiwww.linkedin.com/pub/stan-sikorski/66/350/74b - Stan has over 20 years of experience in financial advising helping firms get setup. He is currently working with multiple startups throughout the nation. He'll be covering partnerships, stock, and the financial pitfalls businesses can run into. Side note: he used to be the CFO of Pound Puppies...yeah...that's right!

Ignite will be sponsoring the beer and pizza this month...so woohoo!!! It should help get the networking and learning juices flowing.

Flow for the night:

• 6:30-6:45 - Networking

• 6:45-7:15 - Stan Sikorski on Finance

• 7:15-7:30 - QA

• 7:30-8:00 - Andrew Rush on Intellectual Property and Patents

• 8:00-8:15 - QA

• 8:15 - TBD - MORE NETWORKING!!

Come out to Ignite, learn something, and let's help the ones around us.

Some suggestions for future topics, admittedly quite a long list, but hoping people will read them and see something they can contribute to. Great discussion this week!

Host people who have started businesses in Jax that failed and talk about how it happened and lessons learned

Host people who have started successful businesses in Jax and talk about how it happened and what it took to be successful

Overview of local funding sources for stage 0 and pre-revenue businesses for people who just have an idea, and/or for like sub-$100K revenue businesses that expect to grow quickly (incubators, angel investor groups, public incentives/resources)

Host a local VC-type person and have them talk about what they look for in a start-up business to invest in, emphasis on what they look for in local Jax businesses.

Talk about what kinds of businesses get started and funded locally: are they mostly non-profit, web services, apps, retail, etc...

Great suggestions Philip. Though I would temper previous successful startups in general. As opposed to just from Jacksonville.

I am not sure that I can express this topic as a title, in one sentence: how to gather market research demand to determine price point for a product or service that one intends to provide, yet divulging the product or service without it being ready for primetime might kill the opportunity. I do understand Non Disclose /Non Compete Agreements; I also understand that Florida is a right-to-work state!

I'm not sure where to share these articles, so I'm going to keep adding them in these comments: http://www.gv.com/lib/getting-out-of-the-building-isnt-enough

Great piece on customer development and getting out of the building by Google Ventures.

    1 · February 10, 2014

    • Anthony C.

There can be - What types of things do you need help with and we can put together a talk specifically around this. Also, this may be a good question for Stan for this Wednesday.

6PM downtown ... that is a hard target to hit coming from the suburbs and fighting traffic.
Any chance to push it back to the original 7PM ?
