Camp Chowenwaw Park is a 150acre site that the Girl Scouts of America operated, for more than 70 years before deciding to relocate. The property has 100 acres of wetlands and 50 acres of uplands, and is located  right at the mouth of Black Creek. This beautiful site contains a predominantly undisturbed upland and wetland natural environment.. Camp Chowenwaw Park is located on 1.5 miles of shoreline on Black Creek and Peters Creek and provides a habitat for many water birds. The aquatic vegetation provides foraging areas for the St. Johns River manatees as well as an ideal habitat for many fish species.  Turkeys, raccoons, bald eagles, river otters, white tailed deer, alligators, foxes, migrating songbirds, as well as frogs, lizards, snakes, and turtles are just a few of the wildlife that can be encountered here.

We will launch in the park and paddle up Petters Creek and back. Bring a lunch and we will have a picnic.

Paddle duration is about 3 hours + lunch time

Distance is about 5 miles

We had multiple manatee encounters the last time we paddled this creek. That was very cool!

Well, not to forget, we may not have seen the manatees', but I FELT one, LOL. Yeap, for those of you who didn't make the trip, and those of you who didn't notioce (Joan, ehhehe), a manatee about took me over. My boat came up and tilted before the manatee went further down under. And Patti said later," oh, yea, I saw the bubbles." A fun trip, beautiful water way.

I hope someone will post their photos of the trip. I'd love to borrow them for my paddle "diary". Thanks.

The scenery was beautiful despite the overcast day. Only thing that could have made it better would have been some additional wildlife sitings for gators, manatee, more waterfowl. People on the trip were great to hang out with for 3 hours.

I have paid and gotten directions from mapquest. It looks pretty straightforward, but are there any quirks to getting there I should know?

Hi Lynne. The camp and launch are right off state Rd 17 at the south west side of The Black Creek Bridge. My phone is [masked] if you get lost. See you there!
