Churrascaria? Say what, you ask? Years ago, the
gauchos (cowboys) of Brazil would cut the best pieces of beef and grill them on a skewer over an open oven, called a
churrasco. Like any interesting ethnic tradition, over time it was brought to America and now we can enjoy it! The churrasco is still a large open oven, but now it has a large electric rotisserie that evenly grills several skewers at once. When the skewers are done,
Churrasqueiros (servers, wearing gaucho-style pants, belts, and hats) bring the skewers through the restaurant in a style called
rodizio, or rotation, where the customers can simply take a serving of each item being offered! Each diner has a small card with green and red sides... green means "bring on the food", and red means "stop, I'm stuffed"! As long as you have your card turned to green, the servers will keep bringing freshly-grilled skewers for you to try! Restaurants in this style have been popular for years, but only in the last few years have we had a churrascaria here in St Louis, and our very own Bacana, located right next to the Chesterfield Mall in the former KC Masterpiece building, makes it local! So, about the food again... it's not just beef on those skewers! Although beef is well-represented, with sirloin,
picanha (marinated top sirloin, a Brazilian specialty), garlic steak, beef shoulder, beef chuck, brisket, ball tip and Brazilan filet normally available. To that, they also add marinaded grilled lamb, two kinds of grilled pork, Brazilian chorizo-like sausages, chicken wings, drummies and bacon wrapped breast meat. That still not enough? They also have varying additional items including shrimp, salmon, and an incredible grilled pineapple with cinnamon! And guess what? That's just the "entree"! Dinner at Bacana includes their unlimited salad bar (with dozens of types of salads and cold dishes) as well as their "hot bar" with a huge selection Brazilian side dishes to round our your meal. Translation: Come very hungry. Now, you're probably thinking that a feast like this costs a small fortune. Well, it's not the cheapest thing out there, but consider: You can easily spend over $30 at most nice restaurants for their best steak. Here, you get an unlimited supply of over a dozen meats, plus sides and salads, for only $29.95. That is a good deal in my book! But it gets even better... what if you aren't a huge meat-eater, or don't have a big appetite? Bacana has recently added a new variation to their menu that makes it even better! For just $18, you get one "mixed grill" skewer, including Picanha, Brazilian filet, shrimp, bacon-wrapped chicken, sausage, chicken wings, and grilled pineapple... and it includes the unlimited salad and hot bar. How are you going to beat that? Vegetarian? Just skip the skewer altogether, and still have a couple dozen salads and hot sides to choose from! You can read more here:
