This will be a thematically broad reading group. Our book selections are chosen through a group voting process. Below are some general guidelines on how our group operates:
Typically, we take book suggestion via email, post a poll, and choose the book with the most votes for the next month. If there is a close 2nd choice, I will post it for the following month. I will carry any books with 4 or more votes over to the next poll and add new suggestions. Exception: Once in awhile, a book comes up at a monthly discussion that sounds great, and we may choose to read it next without a poll if the entire group in attendance agrees. This might seem like a breach in the democratic process, but attendees have to have some kind of perk - we are footing the bill for the group after all!
To offset the cost of the meetup group ($90 for 6 months) we have decided to apply a $15 fee for each monthly book discussion to be divided evenly among those in attendance. Given the average number of attendees, this will usually be $1-$2, or $3 when fewer people attend. In this way, the cost of the meetup is shared proportionately among those who attend.
For years, past organizers have debated about culling members who haven't visited the site recently. I understand life gets in the way at times, and reading suddenly isn't a priority. So, to be fair, but also remove members who might not even use meetup anymore, or who may have moved on in other ways, I will remove anyone who has not logged onto the site in the current calendar year, on December 15th of each year (give or take a day). If I delete you by mistake, I apologize, you are always welcome to rejoin! (I don't think phone app visits register correctly with meetup.com)
You can email me your book title, but due to our member suggestion/polling process, the most I can do for you is add your book to our discussion board titled "Author Suggested Books". If members choose to read them and further suggest them, then they might make the poll!
That's it for now, we look forward to having you join us for some lively debates!
