SHUG 2. Introduction To Luigi (Elias Freider) And Apache Pig (Jonathan Coveney)

We are happy to invite you to the second meeting of Stockholm Hadoop User Group. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 5th, 2013 at 18:00 at Spotify Office (Birger Jarlsgatan 61, 11tr, Stockholm).

During the meetup two 45-minute presentations will be held:

Presentation 1.
Title: Luigi - Batch Data Processing in Python
Speaker: Elias Freider (Spotify)

"Luigi is Spotify's recently open sourced Python framework for batch data processing including dependency resolution and monitoring. We will demonstrate how Luigi can help you get started with data processing in Hadoop MapReduce as well as on your local workstation."

Elias Freider is an analytics infrastructure engineer at the music-streaming company Spotify, based in Stockholm, Sweden. He is one of the two main authors of the recently open-sourced Luigi Python framework for batch data processing and dependency management, used by Spotify for crunching terabytes of data every day.

Presentation 2
Title: Getting started with Pig
Speaker: Jonathan Coveney (Spotify)

"Pig is a data-flow language which makes it easy to do robust data processing and data analysis on data in Hadoop. We'll introduce you to the basics of Pig and show you how to get started."

Jonathan Coveney (@jco) is a PMC member on the Apache Pig project who works on the Analytics and Data Infrastructure team at Spotify, and was previously in the analytics group at Twitter. He has been using Pig for almost 3 years, and has been actively contributing to it for almost 2.

Additional information

The concert

We are very happy to tell that Timbuktu will be performing at Spotify's office after the meetup! ;)

Of course, everybody is invited to stay for the concert and hope that most of you will! The concert will start at 21:00, and we must finish our meetup early enough ;)

Hence, we would like to start our meetup punctually at 18:00, so please come on time, so that we will give our staff enough time to prepare to the concert.

Pizza and beverages

Last, but not least, free pizza and beverages will be available for the participants during the meetup. If you are willing to come, please click the “attend button” on this page. This will help us to estimate the number of pizzas and drinks based on declared attendance.

The event is scheduled for a little more than 2 hours in total. The presentations will take about 1h 30min and +/- 15 minutes for Q&A. After that there will be about 45 minutes of socializing.

Note: please RSVP to this meetup, since we need to put everybody on a guest list for entering the Spotify office. The event will be held in the cafeteria of the Spotify office, so don’t go to the normal entrance but to the 11th floor.

The door will be open at 17:30. Because of fire regulations, we need to keep a list of everybody in the building, so please make sure that you get your name ticked off the list at the entrance or (in case of a +1), make sure that the person at the door puts your name on the list.

See you at the meeting!
