It has been a while since we have conducted a AAII Atlanta Chapter Stock Investing Meetup. We have added 26 members since our last Meetup in April and are eager to jump start our subgroup once again. We have been busy with our parent organization – the Atlanta Chapter of AAII ( and our sister Meetup group the Atlanta CANSLIM/IBD Meetup ( – both of which you are welcome to attend. The next meeting for AAII Atlanta Chapter is on September 16, 2009 with Don Cassidy on Income Investing (dividend stocks, preferred stocks, real-estate investment trusts, master limited partnerships, unit investment trusts, closed end funds and more). The next meeting for CANSLIM will be on September 21, 2009.

We have scheduled our next Stock Investing subgroup Meetup for Tuesday, September 15 at 7 pm at the Georgia State University facility in Brookhaven (directions at Sign-up at

We are still working on the agenda, so please send your thoughts, comments and suggestions. Past Meetups have included Zacks earnings estimates and related services, Morningstar value-oriented stock system, Value stock screens by Benjamin Graham and Joseph Piotroski, exhaustion gap analysis and more.

Potential Topics:

?        We will likely include a update on the 59 screens tracked by the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) at The screens include 19 Value, 24 Growth & Income, 7 Growth and 9 Sector/Specialty screens. AAII has generated the month-by-month performance attributable to those screens since Jan 1998 (11 ? years). This is an outstanding educational tool for anyone serious about investing in stocks. I will provide an overview of the screen methodology and a review of the return performance for the screens.

?        I noticed that Dollar General filed to go public, so perhaps we could discuss “The anatomy of an IPO” by going through the S-1 registration document (prospectus) and discussing how a company goes public, how it is valued, what role the investment banks play and of course, the economics (and fees) of such a deal.

?        Another topic that has been suggested is “analysis of financial statements”, including ratio analysis.

Lastly, the Atlanta Options Club will host their next meeting this coming Monday, Aug 24 at 6:30 at the GSU Facility in Alpharetta. John Brasher of will present on covered calls (options) methods ($10 cover charge). Info at .

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,

Bill Lyman
