A warm up exercise perhaps?

There was a pub game we used to play when I was younger. It had a thread of a story game in it if you realize it can be played at different levels.

Although a drinking game it was not like chasing shots to see who can win at brawn. It is more collaborative but there is the last person to twig as to what's going on. The beer loosens up the ego and the amusement is when everyone's on board. I have no idea if you had anything similar over here.

At it's simplest level it is a connective game where the initiator can give a signal, such as a phrase, within which there is a clue to the connection they have in mind. Sip of Theakston's Old Peculiar.

The first receiver, who is always to the left of the initiator, responds with the next connection in the thread. The initiator gives an indication, true or false, if the guessed connection is correct.

If the first receiver guesses correctly they become the new initiator. A sip of Old Speckled Hen and some folk start keeping score. It's not necessary but it does count as a connection although many would argue for the lucky guess.

If the first receiver guesses incorrectly they are passed over and the next receiver offers a response to the connection. Usually the initiator offers a new clue within the same signal or phrase used before as each receiver in turn fails to guess. This is good for folk new to the game.

If the receiver guesses correctly, and as more initiators are connected, it becomes increasingly obvious what the connection is to those who are connected.

Now, it can happen that a new initiator might have luckily guessed the connection from the previous initiator but not know exactly why. If any new initiator incorrectly grants a new connection to their first receiver the original initiator can challenge each consecutive initiator from current to first with a new clue to confirm that the connection has been lost. It's rare but I have seen threads of three or four connections long collapse in a large enough group. Again, we're not keeping score so take a sup of Murphy's and try again.

All the clues and guesses are spoken out aloud so there is usually shared glances of understanding or increasingly more abstract clues passed back and forth between those who are now connected. A sip of London Pride and a game of throw and catch between those that know ensues.

As more within the group understand the thread it's clear that someone will be the last to guess and, after everyone gives the reveal, that usually means that the loser needs to finish their pint and get the next round in.

It works just as well as with coffee.
