RE: [bookclub-459] The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo... finally

Wow, I ride on the Pinellas trail often. And yes, the people drive crazy. You have to be careful. This reminds me to be stricter with my wife and 10 year old when we ride.  I hope you are going to be okay.

Hi

I am Penny from Dunedin and although a member have not been able thus far to attend any of the Meet Ups for the past few months as I was the victim of a hit and run while riding my bike on the Pinellas Trail,  This resulted in an 8 day hospital stay and a total hip replacement.  Of course none of this has anything to do with the subject matter, (sorry for being so long winded)  I read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo about six months ago and surprisingly had similar feelings about the characters.  Salander was fabulous, complicated, brilliant, and most of all true to herself.  I have not yet read The Girl Who Played with Fire :

Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist are back in The Girl Who Played with Fire, the eagerly awaited follow-up to Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. When two reporters are murdered, Blomkvist is shocked to discover the fingerprints on the murder weapon belong to Salander. As he investigates the slayings, Salander must revisit her dark past to settle with it for good.

Hope to be able to attend a meeting in the near future.

Finally finished The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo... and though I enjoyed my first MeetUp with the group, I had little to say because I had just gotten the book the day before the meeting.  WELL...  since you asked:  the writing syyle was stilted and overblown; the plot so Byzantine and the resolutions/transitions so, well, unresolved that it was ultimately boring.  The interesting parts were those that explored the Swedish character and attitudes.  The characters themselves:  Bolmkvist boring and unrealized, but Salander is incredible, the most exciting female character since Mira Sorvino' role in the way underrated movie "The Replacement Killers".   And I will read the next one in the series, just to get more Salander.  So there... see ya Sept. 15.
