Bummer for the hurricane. I hope no one was wandering around the station trying to find us. Hopefully the next one will be a success!

Good question! Im not super familiar with the place so hopefully someone else can comment. If not, Ill be walking around the main area snapping photos so it shouldnt be hard to find me.

Ok. Im planning on still going at the moment. Im sure we can find somewhere to get in some work. The rain could be fun!

I'm gonna bail on the meetup and hunker down. storm chasing is probably fun, but not my preference for this go-around... I'll try and catch y'all at the next meetup...

Did you envision a shoot solely inside Union Station or something that involved outdoors as well? If the latter, we should probably postpone as it will most likely be raining. If its just indoors, I am still game. I've never done any strobist-type work before. What should I bring besides my camera? Just a single flash? Any type of home made modifiers or a light stand?

Wow, more and more people! Anyone have any friends or associates that might want to model? 16+ photographers is going to be busy!
August 16, 2011
Ahhh okay, I was having visions of a flash mob of photographers roaming around Union Station and seeing the Homeland Insecurity people having a cold sweat as they flip the switches on their flashlights.

Oh, my original plan wasnt for taking pics inside the station but that would be sweet... If everyone shows up, 14 people is a crowd. I was thinking buildings/alleyways/side streets around the area.

The permit form is located here: http://www.unionstationdc.com/i...
Tripod usage requires an "certificate of insurance". If its just for artistic usage and so long as you give them a copy of the stuff you plan on publishing they are generally pretty easy going on these permits in my experience.

I got the information here: http://www.unionstationdc.com/i...
, as far as shooting in Union Station I would recommend getting the photo / authorization. I hate being hassled by flashlight cops and much like the DC metro if you are going to be doing anything other than a point and shoot very quickly you will want to get a permit so your not getting hassled. They have video cameras everywhere and in my experience tend to hone in on me pretty quickly when I pull a full frame camera out.

Do I need a permit to take photographs in Union Station?
Anyone is free to take pictures inside Union Station. However, if you will be using professional equipment such as a tripod, a permit is required. Please click here to complete the photo/film authorization form.

I think tripods are frowned upon EVERYWHERE! :(
Hopefully the weather is nice so we dont have to worry about going outside to shoot.

I"ll be in the area so I'll join as well. What equipment do we need to bring?
July 31, 2011
so one can wander around Union Sta with flashes blazing creatively? I'm game - but will need significant coaching.

Umm Guru yes, seasoned no. Lots of equipment yes, skills... maybe. Yes Dan, meetup/shoot is what I had in mind!

I'm one of "the new kids on the block" - I'm interested in getting into some shoots and learning strobist skills and meeting folks along that path. Shane - are you also a newbie to strobist stuff? or one of the seasoned gurus? wanna try to set up a shoot as a meetup?
