Vegan Potluck and Discussion

  • May 10, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This Meetup is a potluck, which means that everybody brings a dish to share with the others in the group. I would suggest that we all bring a dish that can feed at least 5-6 people.

For all the vegan veterans, here's our opportunity to show the newbies how delicious vegan food can be.To those with little or no experience preparing vegan food, don't sweat it -- it's a support group, not an episode of "Hell's Kitchen."

For all potluck participants, please provide a list of the ingredients used in your dish since a large section of the vegan population is health conscious and/or suffers from food allergies. (If you forget to write them beforehand you can scribble them down when you get there.)

The discussion topic for Friday, May 10 will be:

Veganism: Extreme or Extraordinary?

I chose this topic because when people find out I'm vegan their responses usually fall into two categories: 1) That's crazy! I could NEVER do that! or 2) That's great! I wish I could do that. It seems that whether the response is positive or negative, many people see the vegan lifestyle as being out of the question for them. I would like to discuss this along with any other topics anyone wants to present to the group. I'm really looking forward to getting together to share great food and stimulating conversation with everyone!

I already know what I am bringing to the next potluck - szechuan green beans. I made them tonight and they turned out delicious.

Sounds good. I make those too and I love 'em. It would be great if, at our next meetup, everyone brings their recipe, and their name, on a card. I would volunteer to track down any missing recipes, type them up and post them here - hopefully with pix. What a great opportunity to sample delicious food *And* get the recipes!

    May 10, 2013

    • Brenda S.

We'd love to have you at the next one Ashley. Right now we're going to see how once a month goes and if it's super popular (as it seems it will be) then maybe we can bump it up to twice a month. I'll keep everybody posted.

Sorry I can't attend Friday meetings. Hope you have a wonderful turnout!

    May 6, 2013

    • Brenda S.

Hey Nan. I'm sorry you can't make it on Fridays. I think we need to consider doing the potlucks on different days of the week to accommodate everyone. That will be one of the topics of discussion tonight.

      May 10, 2013

    • David H.

One way to avoid the same day of the week problem and still keep the event in everyone's mind is to have the meetup on the same day of the month. For instance we could set the meetup to be the 10th of the month every month. That way the only months that might be an issue are February and March because the day of the week would not change for those two months on non leap years. If we end up meeting twice per month we could meet on the 1st and 15th or 2nd and 16th (if firsts don't work for people) or whatever. Just an idea.

It's very difficult to get to this location without a car. I can't attend any of the events that are not easily accessible by public transport.

    May 9, 2013

    • Brenda S.

Sorry about that, Silvia. I know there are a couple other people coming on the bus (the #8). At the meetup tonight we'll talk about setting up carpooling for future meetups.

Crystal and I will both be there. We were thinking about bringing snickerdoodles and either eggless salad or tofu chick'n salad.

    May 9, 2013

    • Brenda S.

I'm glad you guys will be there. I've always had a soft spot for snickerdoodles ...
