Buying a Wetsuit

Buying a Wetsuit

Everyone in California should own at least one wetsuit! ;-)

The best wetsuit to get for NoCal is a 4/3 - this means the body is 4mm for warmth and the arms and legs are 3mm for flexibility. The best place to find a used wetsuit is in a surf shop, since they will have a variety.

Probably the best place to go shopping is on 41st Street in Capitola because they have a lot of surf shops: O'Neils, Billabong, Santa Cruz Surf, Freeline, etc. It is always a little hit-or-miss to find a good one that will fit you; you just need to keep checking.

The important thing is to find one that fits you correctly. It needs to be pretty tight - to keep out the water - but not too tight. Usually first time wetsuit buyers will buy one that is too big, because they are not used to putting it on and it feels tight. So be sure to look at the sizing chart (which is different for each different brand) and then ask someone in the store for help.

For prices, a used wetsuit that is in good condition sells for about $100. New wetsuits start about $200 and the top-of-the-line like the O'Neil Psycho go for almost $400.
