Small Actions

Small Actions You Can Take Right Now

  • First, calculate your personal impact.

  • Sign the Live Earth Pledge online.

  • Replace light bulbs with energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Light bulb (CFLs).*

  • Vote! Register here.

  • Turn of lights, appliances, and computers when you're not using them.

  • Unplug your cell phone charger from the wall when your cell phone has finished charging.

  • Buy post-consumer recycled paper.

  • Use less paper (i.e. smaller sheets and the front-and back)

  • Think about the amount of waste you generate and try to reduce it.

  • Borrow books from the library rather than buying them.

  • Take fewer hot showers.

  • Use a laptop instead of a desktop computer.

  • Weatherize your home.

  • Recycle your plastic bags at Publix or Wal-Mart. Drop them off in the bin located within the entry/exit foyer.

  • Purchase a canvas bag from Publix or Wal-Mart to replace paper or plastic.

  • Ask your electric company to perform an energy audit of your home (free) to find out ways you can improve
....your home's energy-efficiency (and save money).

  • When buying new appliances, office equipment, or electronics, look for the Energy Star rating.

  • Teach your children to turn off lights they're not using and to turn off the water when they're brushing their
    ....teeth.

  • Take your kids on an environmentally-themed field trip.

  • Recycle. (Click here for recycling information for your community.)

  • Stay at a Florida Green Lodge.

  • Learn more about global warming.

  • Use green hosting for your website. Check out Aiso.net - "the only 100% solar powered data center in the world". They've been in business for 10 years.

  • Start an integrated pest management program, rather than using traditional pesticides.

  • Practice Waterwise Gardening techniques.
The St. Johns River Water Management District has created a manual on "landscaping to promote water conservation"

  • Try making your own, natural cleaning products. When you purchase cleaning products, look for ones with no phosphates.

  • Incorporate more organic food into your diet whenever possible.

  • Learn about Florida Hometown Democracy

*Cautionary Note: Be careful when opening and handling these bulbs. They contain mercury, a known neurotoxin. Because of this, keep these bulbs out of the reach of children and pets. In homes with small or very active children, install them in ceiling fixtures out of reach. If one breaks, follow the clean-up instructions on the EPA's website. CFLs cannot be thrown in the trash. For information on the correct disposal of CFLs, visit our Message Board's CFL discussion1 or discussion 2.
